I have a few things on India Navigation and that's about it. Enjoy his playing on those older sides but it's rarely mind-altering (for me).

I'd heard the name but never consciously checked out any of his music. It's pretty swell, at least judging by this track.

Dang - the only trumpeters I can think of that Joe recorded with in the 70s are Hubbard and Woody Shaw. It doesn't sound like Woody to me, but then again I've probably listened less to him than some others on the board.

I'm going with my less-obscure guess on #8 and say that it's Freddie Hubbard. If Henderson & Clarke are in the mix, it could be something like this, though the date is a little later.

Yeah, thought it might be Frisell, but I don't know that kind of music very well.

Saravah Samba - I mean, the tune was played by Barouh in "A Man and a Woman," but other than the fact that it was later the name of his label, I know nothing about the reason for the name. Wertman is a "free jazz" bass player - no relation to anything Barouh!

David Wertman - Kara Suite - (Mustevic)

Track 8 reminded me a little of some of Hannibal's playing, less bright however. I can't recall him and Clarke recording together, though, save for with Pharoah. The Von track was deep; languid, but deep. My guess is it's something off of Birth Sign, which I don't own but would like to. I like #10 but I can't for the life of me figure out who the trombonist is. First pass had me thinking maybe Marty Cook, but I don't think it's him.

#7 Robin Kenyatta - "You Know How We Do" from Until (Rudd - trombone; Mike Lawrence - trumpet; Horacee Arnold - drums; Lewis Worrell & Don Moore - bass; Archie Lee - perc.) I've always liked the tune & recognized it immediately from the theme! Carisi is a good guess from #6, I was trying to place it. Don't know personnel yet - have to give more listens. I'm up through 7 right now and am enjoying it very much!

Pierre Barouh's label, most sessions produced by Daniel Vallancien (studios also hosted recording sessions for BYG, probably others). I bet brownie could chime in with more info. I've got some of the easier-to-find Saravah LPs - Fontaine, Steve Lacy, Cohelmec, Jacques Higelin, plus the Trio Camera reissue. Lots of nice stuff, ranging from freaky French folk to free jazz. Have yet to score the J-C Capon LP on the label, or the Nana Vasconcelos solo. Akendengue is from Gabon; gorgeous, folky Afro-pop.

Not gotten around to those Abeleen LPs yet, though I've seen them offered. Thanks for the tip.

Mmm... I've been hit and miss on Qbico. Quality of pressings was sometimes dicey and the special editions were almost never worth what he was charging. But he got the music out there. I didn't think Continent was reissued, but I could be wrong.

You say "Phil Woods" a bit like it's a bad thing...

Qbico is done for with #100. I got this when it came out and I still haven't spun it. Lord knows why... Wouldn't mind hearing those Praxis LPs again, either - it's been ages.

I wondered about that as well, but I can't find anything on the web... Another one that I think hasn't been mentioned here: ESP' Disk AAJ article Lowell is awesome. Also worth checking out the MVP LSD disc on Riti - Joe Morris, Jon Voigt, and the excellent but unknown trombonist Tom Plsek playing Lowell's music.

Wonder if this guy is any relation to Franck and Heinz Wollny, guitarist and bassist who played with A.R. Penck, Coen Aalberts and those other late '70s German weirdos.

Where did you get it for $2? I don't know my 78 pricing, but I would think BN 78s would be valuable.
