I saw him around 2000/2001 in a bar doing a solo set; I'd done my fair share of Takoma listening and wasn't that impressed. In light of his passing and the extensive discography that he built over the last decade, I sort of regret not investigating him further. Clearly he was following in a tradition with as much heart as brain.

That's my impression of a fair number of ECMs that I've heard. I like those three players but not that record.

Funny; I think that a few of Mojo's choices are actually good ones. I'm partial to the first 10 ECMs, but there are others that are top notch.

I didn't know there was a style other than that damn face-in-the-cup cover.

My copy of Duke Pearson's Wahoo has the back cover label affixed upside down. Not uncommon; I've had one like that too.

Yup, the one I was looking at had 19 discs at $50. This was the same guy who had a Mercury box of Bach's cello suites (Starker) for $100. I should have nabbed that one as well - never gonna see a deal like that again!

Oh yeah, I agree JS - music is pretty much what you got when the going gets rough - and I think it probably is for everybody on this board, myself included. Then again, maybe I wouldn't be as broke as I am if I took a breather on buying old Blue Notes and so forth...

I'm not an audiophile, but I don't want crappy-sounding records either... admittedly, a hammered early BN pressing might still sound okay, but I'd much prefer a solid, crisp King issue or a frickin' CD and avoid the hassle of skips, crackle, etc. Should we be concerned, chewy?

I'd take Brownie's advice as well. Most of these I have in King or Toshiba Japanese pressings (at least the 1500 series). The Van Gelder Liberty's of his 4000 series LPs all sound good, so I can vouch for those as well. The early Mobley BNs have been at the $1000+ mark for years with no sign of slowing.
