  1. Apparently still in print. On my list.
  2. That's a good question about the Jazz Life series. There were two Roeling covers with this as the alternate (the other being Ted Curson's Urge). Quite a number of bop sessions were issued in this series - Dexter Gordon, Bud Powell, Howard McGhee's Sharp Edge, etc., as well as pre-bop material. I suspect they were nearly contemporaneous, as the catalog numbers did not change between Roeling and Jazz Life issues.
  3. Indeed, I'll check out anything with Dennis/Denis Charles in the mix. Anyone heard his Silkheart date with Booker T?
  4. I'll add the excellent Masahiko Togashi LP We Now Create, on Victor Japan, to the list. But the notes are in Japanese, so I can't tell you how decently written they are.
  5. Well, to be fair, that's not really a "jazz" record or conceived as such. He got the Red Seal of a classical record. Dixon should have, too (he'd requested that, as a matter of fact), but...
  6. Just a bump to wish Marion a happy 74th birthday today!
  7. There are jukebox 45 versions of both discs too.
  8. LC classification is really what you need to know at this point. ML421 B4...
  9. Wow, a second one with Von and Pat Patrick, too. Sheesh.
  10. It's a decent record, I have a copy minus the "middle finger" but it's an early stereo. Much prefer Skip Spence on his own.
  11. I nabbed your quote from Howard Rumsey (via Leonard Feather) for my facebook quotes. It's a brilliant statement!
  12. Don't worry, you don't "need" it.
  13. Not likely to happen, either. Which is too bad because it's a monumental work.
  14. Too bad Force is not on CD. I prefer it handily over the Hat, which is "good." No idea why Base chose to reissue what it did. There is also a Japanese vinyl pressing.
  15. I can think of some excellent sides on US RCA-Victor: Bill Dixon - Intents and Purposes Sonny Rollins - Our Man in Jazz Sonny Meets Hawk Joe Daley - At Newport '63 Gary Burton - Duster Jeanne Lee & Ran Blake - The Newest Sound Around George Russell - Jazz Workshop Not to mention some excellent discs on European and Japanese RCA imprints by Mal Waldron, Steve Lacy, Lee Konitz, Charlie Mariano, Keith Tippett, Chris McGregor, Ray Russell, Tony Oxley...
  16. Base booted the French LP. I have another Shepp on Uniteledis, Shepp A Massy U-Jaama "Unite," which is a quintet. Don't know much about the label's history, but those Shepps do pop up a fair amount on the used market. Address is thus: 7 rue Viollet le Duc 75009 Paris. My copy of Force has this address: Producteur Uniteledis 19 av. Trudaine P 75009. Gravure et pressage Pathe Marconi. I know Base - they booted tons of shit. ESP, various small-label psych records (International Artists, for example), you name it.
  17. Original label was Uniteledis, French, and part of the Palm/Vendemiaire/Jef Gilson scene.
  18. Jerry Hahn - Ara-Be-In - (Changes) w/ Noel Jewkes, Mike White, Jack De Johnette, Ron McClure.
  19. That's a really fine set, and since right now I can't afford the original Saba and Edici LPs... Don't you mean Brilliant Circles? Fantastic record, in any event.
  20. I got a free Beatles bookmark at the rekkid sto' after work. It's pretty thin, so I'm wondering if it's a fold-down.
  21. This is pretty great. Brewer's presence definitely adds to an interesting vibe. Might I share it on my blog?
  22. Go ask him and report back! Apparently Carlos Ward and Kenny G had the same saxophone teacher in Seattle.
  23. The Ric Colbeck solo on side two, over the ostinato piano-drum pattern, is really something else and totally makes that record for me. I got it sealed years ago but I think it was $20.
  24. Rainbow or King? Or recent Capitol cheapo reissue?
  25. I think it should've been contemporaryladySF, myself.
