  1. OK, thanks for the clarification. I probably won't consciously make an effort to hear this anyway. Herbie, Wayne, Colaiuta and Pattitucci might be another story.
  2. and they did it again a week ago today at ucla!! the most amazing concert with nathan east and vinnie c. and the ucla student wind orchestra. they mostly played wayne and herbie classics with new arrangements and it was breathtaking! and herbie actually played solo a new tune he wrote in tribute to dr. isaku ikeda, the buddhist leader. it was beautiful and i noticed many wet eyes around me! i predict herbie will start writing again in the future (at least many of us hope so)!! Vinnie C. = Vinnie Colaiuta? Great drummer, have him on a disc with Buell Neidlinger that is fantastic. Herbie's music of the '60s is fantastic, but of course he at some point made the decision to a) make money and b) choose how he did that, within an idiom of (somewhat) his own devising. Now, I'm not a huge fan of what he's done since maybe the early '70s, but I do give him props. The Joni thing would've made more sense in 1975 to my ears, but...
  3. You know, I've never been a fan of his music but I always give him utmost respect. RIP, OP.
  4. (Or is this too white for the supremely hip cognoscenti?) I've seen him live and he's good. Dude is actually albino.
  5. Not normally mine, either. Funny how those things go innit?
  6. Anybody got a spare or know where to find a copy of this oddball split session? I was just reminded of it the other day. Thanks, Clifford Art Blakey and his Jazz Messengers/Sonny Murray Quartet-1968 JCD 08 Bill Hardman-tp Julian Priester-tb Billy Harper-ts Ronnie Matthews-p Lawrence Evans-b Art Blakey-d Paul Jeffrey-ts Kenneth Terroade-ts Ronnie Beer-ts Sunny Murray-d
  7. Can't get with Das EFX, but the Fu-Schnicken scene is hot (hadn't heard them before). I saw, scrolling thru my sister's iPod, the Dap Kings. I didn't feel like listening myself - was too busy digging on Tony Ortega to be bothered. So, I remain uneducated in that but moreso in Brooklyn hip-hop.
  8. You know, I've never heard that record. The selection posted here isn't bad at all, better than I expected anyway.
  9. I really like Scotty Holt with Noah Howard and with Jackie McLean. Wonder whatever happened to him?
  10. Oh, wait, never mind, I guess we don't have to "get in line"...
  11. Wasn't this board almost shut down for lack of funds? This might be not only the perfect stamp of definition on our "little" online community, but also a great opportunity to fundraise for the board and its proprietors.
  12. Happy birthday! I'm about half done with a bag of listening "thanks" for your hip ears and good cheer on this board.
  13. Good choice! Great variety of tunes on that one.
  14. Fahey - The New Possibility - (Takoma orig, nice textured sleeve)
  15. But not in the sequel, "porcy's analyst" ...
  16. Once the myth of Santa was revealed to me and my sister, my parents changed the name "Santa" on the gifts to whatever pets we had at the moment. My rabbit got me a lot of nice stuff over the years!
  17. Glad somebody around here gets my jokes!
  18. There are good album covers and then there are the rest. It's not going to keep me from buying something if it looks dumb, as long as the music is interesting. FWIW: I'm surprised some of those cheapo America jackets aren't somehow making their way in here... and despite Carol Goss's video synthesizing street-cred, most IAI releases' artwork bug the shit out of me.
  19. I'd buy a vinyl copy. Hand-numbered and silkscreened, perhaps?
  20. Did not know that he was using a plunger! Maybe it's just his hand over the bell. But it sure sounds like a plunger effect was intended. And I can't think of any other examples. Anybody? Well whatever he's doing, it sounds good to me. Supposedly, Alan Shorter didn't own a mute and used a kleenex box on at least one session.
  21. If you're speaking of the Tolliver lp, I just picked it up for $6.00! if not, nevermind. Seems about right for the Arista pressing. The last time I saw the original Polydor, it was "add a zero to the $10 price..." Does the Polydor have better sound or does it fetch that price because it's the original release?? Probably the latter, though I am not sure. It's scarce in any event. I'll add that when I upgraded from the Dave Burrell Arista to the Douglas original (w/o extra tracks, mind you), the sound was fuller and more dynamic than the Arista-Freedom. With respect to the Cecil Nefertiti twofer, I have a 70s Fantasy blue-label issue and the Dutch Fontana. The Fontana sounds fantastic; the fantasy less so. The quality of the vinyl is pretty different between those two.

  23. I really, really fucked up not buying the International Polydor issue of that thing for $10 in about 1997. I haven't seen it for that price since! Great record, of course...
