  1. No, I wish I had. Saw him perform but never got the chance to talk to him. In the last 15 years I've really come around on the electronic stuff. Had it before just for "completism" but now I quite like it. Sometimes you have to grow into something that was done several years before you were born.
  2. Correct. He would've been quite something in that context.
  3. Bill Dixon would've been awesome on Ascension though I can see why, in theory, he's not there. Thornton and Shorter make a lot of sense and certainly could've been on it. Simmons knew Coltrane, as did Lasha, so I suppose it could've worked out if they were in New York at the time of the recording. The only player I know of who was asked and demurred as far as being on Ascension was Frank Wright, though there might've been others as well.
  4. need to dig out my CDs of the Mercury/Fontana dates. I remember not really being floored by them but it's been a long time and my tastes have changed.
  5. Killer footage. I'm a fan of "Your City is Falling" and this is an excellent find.
  6. assume this will exist as a CD soon enough. Curious to hear what I haven't heard before.
  7. Excellent date. Anyone else notice some "crunch" in the pressing on "My Funny Valentine" ?
  8. Ditto. Seemed like a fascinating character.
  9. Terrible news -- we were just chatting a couple of weeks ago. He was a genius.
  10. In Haarlem -- Blood was issued on International Polydor, while Blood was released on Fontana. Both were produced by Alan Bates.
  11. Great set. I do have a bit of "crunch" in the pressing on my copy, a few spots in "My Funny Valentine." This has become par for the course in newer pressings -- stitching/non-fill. It is a bummer. Not enough of a biggie to return it but I wouldn't turn down a fixed version.
  12. Sad news. As a recent Kingston transplant, I wish I'd been able to meet him.
  13. True about Love is More That Words -- jammer! Arthur Lee is pretty interesting.
  14. yeah, it's messy but fun. I like Love. From a few years later, the 2LP set Out Here on Blue Thumb is a fave. The 12 minute "Doggone," mostly a feature for drummer George Suranovich, is cool.
  15. Their FMP is one of the few FMPs I've never owned. I'd probably enjoy it; the cover is great.
  16. in the free improvisation realm, this one is good: https://www.discogs.com/release/3199135-L-S-F-M-Άδωνις-21101983 with Bernd "Pinguin" Moschner on tuba.
  17. yeah, this one is great. I have a few of the Ilhan Mimaroglus as well and can recommend them.
  18. Yeah, agree it's a shame Doyle's music is out of print for the most part. I have had Alabama Feeling a few times and the pressing isn't exactly great, but surely someone could clean up the audio from a vinyl copy. I don't know if the tapes still exist anywhere -- maybe with Doyle's family in Alabama, but hard to say. At least this one is available digitally, and legitimately: https://arthurdoyle.bandcamp.com/album/first-house-recorded-live-at-the-stone-july-11-2012 oh, and this one too: https://ayler-records.bandcamp.com/album/live-at-glenn-miller-caf-3
  19. Yeah, that is super -- got it from the WV website years ago. No idea who would have the rights. Would be great to see a little CD set of other New Thing at Newport recordings -- Cecil, Bill Dixon, Paul Bley, Joe Daley...
  20. Yup -- the quote referred to Burton's ESP records only. But I do have that Clean Feed disc.
  21. Sad news the other day about this. RIP.
  22. Too bad. His records with McGann are great.
  23. One hundred percent. And yes, Stephen, good point about Buckmaster -- fascinating individual!
  24. Reissue of Fifteen Saxophones will be repressed fairly soon, I think. The LPs of Solos, Four Cuts, and Having Been Built on Sand are out officially tomorrow (though I think pre-orders have landed most places).
