the problem with the ignore list is that sometimes good commentary gets buried/disappeared as a result. re: news, I tend to side with the left of left of center but that discourse is of course incomplete. That said, if the Guardian knows what's up in terms of NYC culture more than the NYT, that is a problem.

yeah, those columnists are who I was thinking of and bring them to the right of center-left IMO. I'm far from the broader world of journalism and find the NYT pretty pathetic in terms of its cultural coverage, which is pretty nonexistent and a slap in the face given its home city's impact in the arts. But neither paper is what I would call radical, just milquetoast and ready for corrections the next day. I think this thread could veer dangerously close to a political one so I'll stop there.

Sad to hear that people didn't show. However, booking concerts upstate and in the city for several years now I can tell you that there is no magic 8 ball for turnout. Some things I think nobody will show up to are packed, and bills that feel legendary to me produce crickets. My promotion strategy hasn't changed -- actually it's better now -- but you really never know what will happen.

NYT and WSJ are fairly centrist to center-right if they lean in any direction. Very little hardcore about them.

My cat makes her own music. Sometimes I play bird sounds for her, which she gets a kick out of. My roommate ~12 years ago (before I got married) had a cat who sat in front of the speakers for hours and listened to stuff. He was pretty unique in my experience.

YMO is pretty cool. I haven't gone beyond the Hosono/Sakamoto orbit, mostly because I think they're interesting composers. Sakamoto has made some pretty weird albums.

I haven't listened to those mentioned above in years. Years. Be Music, Night is probably my favorite Tentet CD because of the Patchen readings. The Tchicai performance is very good too -- I also like the Tchicai CD with Engines. But of course JT is another kettle of (or tin of) fish altogether.

Sad news -- six years older than me.

I like Rod Levitt. His RCA's are fun. Never seen the Fontana offered for sale, but I do have and dig the Riverside.

East Village jazz LPs: Academy on E 12th; A-1; Stranded (maybe). Union Square: Academy on W 18th Chinatown: DMG Flatiron/Midtown: JRC Brooklyn: Academy Annex in Greenpoint (Oak St); Human Head (Williamsburg); Earwax (Williamsburg) DMG, 18th st both good for CDs, other places less so. JRC CD bins seemingly haven't been restocked in years.

Hell of a player and a sweet, hilarious person. She will be greatly missed by so many.

Totally. Impressions of New York was the first of his albums I heard, back in college, and it floored me. He worked with seemingly everybody, and everybody sounded like they were on fire when playing his tunes.

Damn, that's sad news. Was lucky to see her in more recent years and she sounded great... didn't have an easy life, but seemed like a genuine person.
