  1. Also to say that this great tune on side B, ‘Understanding’, I’ve definitely heard before played live. I wonder where/when. Maybe Shaw was playing it years later at Ronnie’s.
  2. First impressions from LP1 is that sound quality is pretty good considering the provenance - recorded quite hot. Shaw cackles with great gusto into the mike - very much on form. Must have been great to see this one live. At times the feel sort of reminds me of Morgan’s ‘Live at the Lighthouse’, then I am reminded of the common factor - Harold Mabern.
  3. Enjoyed seeing that band around the time this one and ‘Post Motown Bop’ came out.
  4. Shame to have to think of selling off this good stuff just when you are able to enjoy. To me, half the appeal of retiring is to actually have the time to listen to these sets. In fact, it is starting to sound damn appealing.. Those Debut boxes are particularly good !
  5. Lord Percy Mrs Miggins Flash
  6. My LP version of ‘Understanding’ has just arrived. Looks like a nice package. Also ordered the Hargrove/Miller on vinyl so some good listening coming up later on.
  7. They had some in just after RSD but can’t have been many. I find myself buying less vinyl these days - I guess the pandemic put a premium on costs. More than happy with CDs for most things these days.
  8. JazzMessengers had a better price than that, all gone now though. That title quite elusive on vinyl here in the UK on RSD for some odd reason. Same with the Hargrove/Miller and Charles Lloyd. Bill Evans still MIA. JazzMessengers did have the Harold Land on vinyl, not sure if they still have it in stock. It is getting to the stage where one needs to take out a mortgage on the house when these release batches come round. I’m sure that in the last year or so what used to be £15 an LP is now an average around the £30 mark.
  9. The ‘W’ brigade would ban that one !
  10. Never thought I’d ever post an album by a Country singer on a forum like this (I’m with Buddy Rich on this) but this is Bobbie Gentry and the album is very good indeed. Cover photo by Val Wilmer. Taken at the time of Gentry’s late 1960s BBC ‘specials’.
  11. Picked that one up as part of the RSD purchases. As it is raining today, good day to play it as well as the Harold Land. Good of Carter to do this signed edition for In-and-Out. Have been hearing good reports of their Rolf Kuhn 2x45 too.
  12. Are they CDs or CD-Rs? Vols 1 and 2 on their site seem to be described as such.
  13. All seems fairly normal round here. People in shops respecting spacing and by and large, still wearing masks. I figure that as long as I avoid raves/discos etc. (not difficult) things will probably be quite manageable. More normality has definitely returned. Can’t speak though for city dwellers..
  14. I remember Ward Swingle and the Swingle Singers being on BBC TV a lot about 45-50 years ago. Almost as common a sighting as Marcel Marceau ! Never did get a copy of that nice Philips 4CD box.
  15. Very good album. Found a copy on vinyl just before the pandemic. Subtle cover art - not !
  16. Japanese Progressive issue/Teichiku
  17. Yeah, ‘stealth’ Horace Tapscott session.
  18. I’ve suspected that that is what is going on with at least one internet seller of jazz vinyl that I know of, who shall remain nameless.
  19. Totally stark-raving nuts !
  20. The studio version has better sound and solos (eg. Shaw) in my opinion. Live version very nice addition. Quite different feel to the two versions. They should do a T-Shirt with that logo !
  21. Easy one - Yes ! (apologies to your wallet)
  22. Esquire 10” in great condition. According to the price sticker I paid $9.99 in New Zealand with a $20 discount. If I remember correctly the store also had 2 copies ! Early JR Monterose appearance. Imported by Chappell via Sydney according to back sticker. Repatriated by me !
