  1. Yeah, I saw that. The mania exhibited on that thread is only rivalled by the 2021 RSD thread on that forum. Reminds me of the ‘Messiah’ sketch on Life of Brian. Good sounding session though !
  2. Pacific Jazz DG stereo Drummer Doug Sides resident and gigging over here in the UK !
  3. My LP version is in the mail, courtesy of the Men From Barcelona.
  4. Unusual to see the Germany manager sweating and worrying on the bench. Agree that the French team showed more flair and pace in their attacks.
  5. I think my copy is in better shape. Doesn’t have the Joe signature though. That deep groove must be the factor on this one. Can’t recall ever seeing one on this title. At the end of the day, it’s only indicative of the die being used.
  6. Worth getting. This cut has lots of ‘presence’ and the quality is up there. I never heard last year’s vinyl version but this looks to be a better quality issue all round. Even the Hoffman Board RSD review thread is raving about it ! What you get on this one is more of a straight transfer from tape, warts and all. ‘Grandmixer DXT’ (whoever he is) who did the processing on the original issue is short-circuited. The sound to me has more presence and ‘air’.
  7. Wasn’t originally going to get this as I have the (then globally rare) CD but I wanted it on vinyl. First impressions - they did a really nice job, admittedly pricey over here but it does include facsimile poster, concert programme and booklet. The music and performance of course is superb. Sound is nice and crisp, matt sleeve is sort of like old style Impulse.
  8. Absolutely right. If the whole album had been at that level, it would be a classic.
  9. I just ban them..and dogs ...
  10. It’s a bit of a mixed bag with a definite commercial slant but overall I like it. McCartney’s ‘Jet’ for example was never going to be a modern jazz standard. Having said that, I think the band has been well captured and the trumpet pyrotechnics always impressive. I think there is one killer cut - ‘Superbone Meets The Bad Man’ which finishes off side 2, with a good outing for Bruce Johnstone (who I think was a hang over from the Ernie Garside UK band) on baritone. I think ex board member ‘Deep’ is on drums on this LP ! I saw Maynard here in the UK with an orchestra similar to this one about 5 years later and have fond memories of it. Maynard played quite a bit on superbone that night.
  11. French Muse pressing. Saw this exact group (minus Abbey) in 1979, when this one was their most recent release. Great to be reminded of it.
  12. Here’s wishing the very best to him for a fast recovery.
  13. The old ‘fruit box’ goes back over 40 years in design terms but over the years Linn and third parties have given options for bearing, power supply, suspension and even outer body upgrades. You can spend from circa £1.5k to £30k+. I think the only original bits on mine are the platter and outer body ! You can also get good UK dealers to build up a s/h LP12 for you - a cost effective option. It isn’t a cheap option but it is built to last. Servicing usually a good move every 10 years or so. Another advantage is that cosmetically it can look very good. I wouldn’t worry too much about direct drive either - good belt drive will usually surpass indifferent direct drive at typical price points e.g. for Planar 3. Paging porcy62 for his comments/thoughts on Brinkmann.. A slippery slope...
  14. Rega or Linn would be my recommendation. With Rega you can start more basic at e.g. Planar 3 and work up the range. I’ve used a Linn LP12 for many years and swear by it - wonderfully upgradeable but you could start with the core ‘Basik’.
  15. Friday promises to be entertaining.
  16. ‘Modern-mainstream’ seems to have morphed into ‘mainstream’. The latter I think of as Scott Hamilton, Buck Clayton, Ruby Braff etc. and if you are getting adventurous, Clark Terry/Bob Brookmeyer.
  17. ‘Rampant’ is over exaggerating it - at least at present. The levels are also very localised, albeit spreading out. A couple of deaths a day nationwide.
  18. Apparently Charles T. has just undergone an emergency dental procedure. Hope he gets well soon. Rescheduled for Sept I think.
  19. The ‘Prince Albert’ - an occasional location for a pint or two when I lived in this area, back in the day. Never saw any jazz there though. Some good stuff being put out on this label but I have had playback troubles on my CD player with at least one of their disks (one of the compilations). Agree that they are very good value.
  20. Good advice. I too have had work colleagues who never made it even to retirement and others who maybe had just a few years after retirement. Certainly has given me pause for thought, the systems/software/IT area can be brutal. At the pre-retirement training I took, one of the recommendations was to put together an action plan linked to your new goals/aspirations and to regularly review it. They recommended maybe 3-4 diverse goals and linking these with your interests/hobbies/talents, maybe perhaps putting the consultancy in as part of a portfolio.
  21. Strut have done a fine job on this facsimile release with an informative booklet. Very much a time capsule but in a very good way.
