JazzMessengers had a better price than that, all gone now though. That title quite elusive on vinyl here in the UK on RSD for some odd reason. Same with the Hargrove/Miller and Charles Lloyd. Bill Evans still MIA. JazzMessengers did have the Harold Land on vinyl, not sure if they still have it in stock. It is getting to the stage where one needs to take out a mortgage on the house when these release batches come round. I’m sure that in the last year or so what used to be £15 an LP is now an average around the £30 mark.

The ‘W’ brigade would ban that one !

Never thought I’d ever post an album by a Country singer on a forum like this (I’m with Buddy Rich on this) but this is Bobbie Gentry and the album is very good indeed. Cover photo by Val Wilmer. Taken at the time of Gentry’s late 1960s BBC ‘specials’.

Picked that one up as part of the RSD purchases. As it is raining today, good day to play it as well as the Harold Land. Good of Carter to do this signed edition for In-and-Out. Have been hearing good reports of their Rolf Kuhn 2x45 too.

Are they CDs or CD-Rs? Vols 1 and 2 on their site seem to be described as such.

Covid Vaccination Poll Update

All seems fairly normal round here. People in shops respecting spacing and by and large, still wearing masks. I figure that as long as I avoid raves/discos etc. (not difficult) things will probably be quite manageable. More normality has definitely returned. Can’t speak though for city dwellers.. -
I remember Ward Swingle and the Swingle Singers being on BBC TV a lot about 45-50 years ago. Almost as common a sighting as Marcel Marceau ! Never did get a copy of that nice Philips 4CD box.

Very good album. Found a copy on vinyl just before the pandemic. Subtle cover art - not !

Yeah, ‘stealth’ Horace Tapscott session.

I’ve suspected that that is what is going on with at least one internet seller of jazz vinyl that I know of, who shall remain nameless.

Totally stark-raving nuts !

The studio version has better sound and solos (eg. Shaw) in my opinion. Live version very nice addition. Quite different feel to the two versions. They should do a T-Shirt with that logo !

Easy one - Yes ! (apologies to your wallet)

Esquire 10” in great condition. According to the price sticker I paid $9.99 in New Zealand with a $20 discount. If I remember correctly the store also had 2 copies ! Early JR Monterose appearance. Imported by Chappell via Sydney according to back sticker. Repatriated by me !

‘Paris Reunion Band’, yes that’s right. Never saw them but they did I think do a UK tour including either the Camden or Bracknell Festival. Have one of their LPs - surprisingly lukewarm. Great little box ! Plus the between-solos Tai-Chi demos as well !
-
I’m glad I didn’t see Woody Shaw in 1987 - prefer to remember him from 1983. Got the feeling that his small group never toured here after that, maybe only an appearance with the ‘Paris All Stars’.

Back on deck with this one. As Simon Spillett’s blog points out, there is considerable track overlap with the ‘Impressed 3’ compilation Tony Higgins compiled in the naughties and which wasn’t officially released at the time. So - it sort of sees the light of day. I am inclined to agree that the large group material is some of the best in this set and is at least a match for anything coming out of the US at the time.

Worth the agro ! Glad I picked this one up, seems to have been a popular RSD issue. Kirk does a reprise of his hosepipe solo on side 2, as featured on Tubby Hayes ‘Return Visit’. A curate’s egg, perhaps?

‘Parkinson’ BBC chat show. Never saw that one. Roy Castle of ‘Dr Terror’s House of Horror’ fame (he was ‘in’ Tubby Hayes’ band) amongst other things.

Audio from the Les Tomkins archive but Gearbox have done a very fine job of the LP mastering. Mike is too near Ronnie Stephenson’s drums but the music is captured very well indeed, with great ‘punch’ and atmosphere. A winner.

Seemed to play OK with my older machine but on the more recently acquired higher spec machine the problem was encountered. Not willing to risk it any further. So far only had this problem with ‘Soho Scene 63’ (I think). The player has had no problems with e.g. Acrobat.
-
I had trouble with my CD player after playing one of their sets - it sorted itself out after a power off but not willing to risk it again so the ‘Soho Scenes’ are now banned chez mois (at least on the main CD player). Shame really. Wish they had used real CDs.

The Gearbox LP pressings are very good so I will be in for this. Usually not extortionate either (at least from here). They have been on form of late, with their recent 1963 Roland Kirk Ronnie Scott’s issue.
