  1. I agree. First time I’ve heard it but Lloyd and Frisell are in great form. Charles Lloyd is getting even better with age !
  2. I’m sorry for Spike with his loss and hope that they pull through all of this OK.
  3. Looks like it is that ‘Jeru’ biography of Mulligan, a relatively recent book.
  4. Maybe. I want vinyl for this one though and I’ll hazard a bet that the sonics will be good. The price doesn’t seem extortionate for what is on offer.
  5. Tempted by this. Wonder why they have issued as 4x45s and not just a straight 2LP though.
  6. Didn’t catch that one but I did see the ‘80th Birthday Performance’ In London (QEH I think). Shepherd was also in the band for that one. Memorable evening ! If I remember rightly they played ‘The African Game’ in the 2nd set and finished on ‘So What’, to standing ovation and with Russell beaming from ear to ear. Such things are unforgettable. The other highlight was ‘Listen to the Silence’ featuring Palle Mikkelborg.
  7. Sgt Bilko Sgt Slaughter John Sergeant
  8. One of the releases of the year, for sure.
  9. Shake in ‘pipe and slippers’ mode. Superb sonics as usual from Vocalion.
  10. It’s everywhere ! HJ’s have it too.
  11. I’ve got a DVD of ‘The Connection’ which was available around 15 years ago, back in the day when there was a glut of good jazz films coming out on DVD. Glad I picked it up - will rewatch at some stage.
  12. Sad news - but a good, long life, RIP. I’ll be sure to spin a bit of the Mosaic set tonight.
  13. Yes, I caught Stan and the Octet live playing the ‘Hong Kong Suite’ in one of the last appearances I saw prior to his passing. Predictably good. Still have a Pablo cassette of that one somewhere, bought at time of issue (‘76?)
  14. Other than a slightly sore left arm and a hint of a yawn next day, nil effects for me. Hardly any different from my usual flu shot. Must be around 20 million over here who have now had this so-called super risky jab. Sadly, the dilly dallying by various officialdoms in the deluded pursuit of ‘zero risk’ will have consequences.
  15. Nice choices ! The Teddy Wilson Verve is good too (sorry !)
  16. First impressions of the ‘Live a Gaveau’ album are that the concert was recorded in excellent sound, with the audience atmosphere captured very well. Nice and crisp recording by INA - only recently found, apparently, previously believed lost. So, it complements the studio version very nicely, although maybe the ‘ringer’ soloists such as Shaw are missed. My copy is a French Waxbuyer’s Club Edition - in fact I think this release was done for their subscription, with a very limited number also put out on sale on Sam’s site (now OOP). It comes with fancy OBI and second JP Leloir insert photo of the concert.
  17. Same repertoire - still working my way through the original but presentationally the ‘Live’ LP looks lovely. Will report in due course. ’A Gaveau’ is a corker of an LP. Plus of course it has Woody Shaw with Sonny Grey as added bonus, playing some very robust arrangements. Next up - Sahib Shihab with Gilson’s ‘Unit’ I’m sure it knocks the Tone Poet for six !
  18. Yeah, I caught that Tyner Trio with Avery Sharpe at Ronnie Scott’s a couple of times. I had the feeling it was Tootie Heath on drums but may have been Louis Hayes.
  19. I think the Duke Capitol was still there when I looked a day or so ago. The Buck Clayton on LP is pretty elusive I think so would expect it to go for more. It is one of the ones in the heavier vinyl.
  20. Got my copy off Mr Cuscuna, when he was offering them up new on eBay. I don’t think it was for much more than that, $99 I think - and copy number 20 something. You are right though - it used to go for lots more. A wonderful set.
  21. I though the price was pretty good ! All theoretical now though..
