Blast from the past. I remember them playing it too, at Ronnie Scott’s and I think it was 1980 as well. They played quite a bit of the album ‘Don’t Lose Control’. This is the first time I am hearing this Carnegie Hall material - very positive first impressions.

I don’t know much about Percy France Dan but this website looks extremely good - very comprehensive and in depth, reminding me of James Harrod’s similarly excellent West Coast site. Well done sir !

Hopefully - but not holding my breath. According to the bio, Stan hated it. Personally, I think it’s great ! Which reminds me, I need to get ‘Free an’ One’ with Peter King, recently reissued by Clark T. Wonder if the ‘British Jazz Explosion’ will reissue some of Stan’s albums on vinyl?

Didn’t that spin off from Carl Jefferson’s Summer Jazz Parties, when he used to invite pretty well everyone in US Mainstream jazz? That label got a lot of profile (relatively speaking - for jazz that is) from the mid 70s through the 80s.

I think the first CD version that came out was white spine ‘Collectors Choice’. Still have my copy. Big John did have a habit of issuing one offs on BN which then went into obscurity (i.e. ‘Memphis’ German Liberty). Liking it !

I’d completely forgotten about this thread but the Val Wilmer incident at the London JATP concert/ Jazz 625 and the comments from christiern are a horror story. Wasn’t she doing seamstress work to get by in those later years? (located in Queens I think). Also recall hearing that BN tracked her down to pay overdue royalties.

I’ve been giving disk 1 with ‘Una Mas’ and ‘Page One’ a couple of spins today. The only versions of these I have heard which sound comparable are on the original release mono LPs, the punch and crispness is captured really well. A winner !

I don’t know if they are still numbering the booklets in order or if it is random but mine is in the high 600s so looks to be selling well.

Damn, sorry to hear that. It was still in stock the last time I looked. If it’s like the Desmond, they will get another batch in.
