Mosaic's Black and White label box set
sidewinder replied to ghost of miles's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yeah, my comments aside, I’m almost certainly going to buy this one (eventually). -
I associate this one with around the time that Sade got to number 1 and jazz as background music in wine bars was ‘hip’. I think I only ever saw the film on TV and fell asleep.

Mosaic's Black and White label box set

There comes a stage when you have to consider whether or not you will ever get through listening to 12 CDs of this stuff, even considering retirement listening time, taking into account the ‘to be opened’ pending pile building up. Good that Mosaic are still gung-ho with releases though. -

Never read these but will look at checking them out. The second novel had the most profile over here, back in the 1980s during the ‘jazz boom’. An unlikely combination of Bowie, Patsy Kensit, Gil Evans and Mingus (not forgetting the then London resident, Slim! ).

I have ‘Quantum’ on CD and will give it a spin. I think I have a copy of the LP as well but not sure. ‘Worlds 3/4’, the one put out on Island Records, has been reissued on vinyl by Superior Viaduct I believe.

I’ll take 3 then.. I’ve just given them a spin-through on side 1. The Trunk compares pretty well but I would say that the Columbia is most definitely more focussed, dynamic and with a better sound-stage (or maybe it is me ). More ‘presence’. I guess that it is possible that this could be the effects of magnetic tape dispersion over 50 years? In any event, Trunk have done a great job. I believe that the reason that the original cover wasn’t used for the reissue is that Basil didn’t like it. Personally I prefer the original but I also really like the Trunk gatefold. I hope they put that Basil K. voice publicity tape on line. That place is like a black hole for stray dosh.. Incidentally, it is interesting that Basil K. felt that the first version of ‘Worlds’ didn’t fully represent his vision and that Trunk’s later ‘Quantum’ was nearer the mark. Personally, I think of ‘Worlds’ 1/2 as being pretty ground-breaking.

A really nice blast from the past !

Now a block of flats at the top end of Blackheath, apparently ! Like the first Bird/Curtis LP, this one is definitely a ‘find’ from my perspective. I wonder if Ray Shea has any more test pressings in his attic? (highly unlikely). Incidentally, it would appear that the New Jazz Orchestra was a spin-off from the house band at this venue (when it had John Mumford in the front line with Ian Bird).

Very nice. It was their planned second LP after the first one’s 99 copies and only got as far as the Test Pressing stage before Tony Pike Music went bust. Well up to the standard of the first LP, not dis-similar to what Rendell/Carr were doing at the time although a bit more straight-ahead and ‘Horace Silverish’. This first commercial issue is taken from a pristine test pressing and sounds AOK.

Same here - caught that one in Southampton. Some years before that he also appeared over here as featured soloist with Charles Tolliver’s Big Band, I recall. Plus a great appearance at the Strata East London Concert where they did Capra Black. Good one.

Return to Analog reissue. Very much a Guy Warren LP with the Rendell/Carr group and Amancio D’Silva along for the ride. Nice sonics - I’ll be surprised if the original Columbia sounded any better. A big . The only negative is that they didn’t duplicate the original Columbia rear sleeve as in the Jazzman releases. Minor complaint though, considering the price and quality of pressing. Incidentally, nothing like Rendell/Carr. More like Brotherhood of Breath. Don Rendell quite ‘off piste’.

Copy number 320 just landed from West London. ’Return To Analog’ who have reissued this have also put out some interesting CBC Radio Canada reissues, which I must check out. I note with this Guy Warren that the co-operation of the Warren Estate is credited, so maybe we will also see reissues of ‘Emergent Drums’ and ‘The African Soundz’.

I saw that group at a club in Toronto. Our table was right next to Elvin’s drums ! On that occasion I was most fortunate to meet and chat with Elvin and I still have the signed event flyer. With regard to the Carnegie Hall performance, I think Elvin played first with his group with Ravi, Fortune, Pickens and Chip Jackson followed by McCoy’s trio and then Charles Lloyd with his quartet.

Good move !
