  1. I’ve actually got a copy of that 1961 Jazz Monthly with the Mobley article. I need to check those out more often !
  2. I give it !!!!
  3. The Sam Lazar tracks are nice - and were new to me.
  4. Do you have a ‘Northern Vernacular’ variant of Google up there, Bill?
  5. I was there for one of those first London (Hammersmith Odeon) concerts back in 1982 - possibly the second of two performances that night. Huge expectations in the crowd, as I don’t think he had played a major London UK since about 1970 (Isle of Wight, I guess). What I recall is that it wasn’t very long (one set, just over an hour), Miles looked very frail (not expected), emerging onto the stage with walking stick and that Mike Stern was featured very extensively in Van Halen mode. Wish I’d been closer to the stage, my seat was well back. I’ve got recollections of someone shouting out ‘play some jazz’ at one point. I remember being surprised by just how boppish/straight ahead ‘My Man’s Gone Now’ was - and the fact that he even played it at all. That performance was a highlight of the show (along with a lengthy-ish ‘Ife’). Inconceivable during the ‘Agharta’ period. Ian Carr’s book had also just come out before this show so I always associate this concert with reading that (excellent) book.
  6. I went years before I could find an affordable copy of the Stuff Smith set. It is great ! $100 is an excellent deal for this music and the $40 that Ed paid is a travesty..
  7. I have one of these (the ‘62, I think). The focus is on the ‘Mod’ scene of the time and the type of music which might have featured at e.g. the Flamingo Club in London. So - hard bopish stuff with an R&B focus. Enjoyable combination but I find that the sound is a bit compressed. Probably due to CD length (these are very full sets). Much of the US music comes from sessions on Prestige, Argo, BN etc. which would have been issued as 45rpms. for dukebox play.
  8. The Howard Riley can be very difficult to find in great condition, like many of that Brit Jazz CBS batch. When you do, it isn’t cheap either. The vinyl is superb for catching the subtleties of Alan Jackson’s drumming though. I have the ‘Crescent’ in the UK HMV mono pressing. I think it cost me about £15. Tonight’s Turtle Records fest -
  9. UK CBS stereo - stunning ! Isn’t that ‘master tape’ the one originally used for these HMV LPs 50 years previously?
  10. We have much to thank him for. Happy Birthday !
  11. Kevin - cheers for that hint. mjazzg - that was the tour that he brought his trio over to play with a fine UK big band. I saw the Turner Sims gig attended also by John and was so impressed that I popped over to Bath to see them the next night. Even better, Sam was happy to chat after the gig and sign my Mosaic and a few Conns ! They did also play the Barbican I think, on that tour. Sam covered all the bases - including piano.
  12. Ah sorry - meant West, not East. I was thinking of Soul Brother. Saw a copy in there but must have gone as not listed online. Have a copy of that HMV too - never compared it with the Impulse, will have to do so.
  13. I get the same sort of feeling every time I open up the ‘who are you seeing live’ thread and see JohnS’s post about going to see Sam Rivers that night. Sigh... (was also there that night - a wonderful concert)
  14. From a certain on-line outlet points East of London, perchance? Cuban Cora pressing (). Defies all expectations, better sonics than the usual Pablo. A keeper !
  15. He’s actually on this live small group recording with Dizzy - The one time I saw him was in a Dizzy Gillespie Reunion Big Band trombone section (along with George Bohannon, if I remember correctly). This was after Dizzy had passed. I was wondering what the connection was, until I saw this. Thinking about it, that band had Billy Root in the tenors, Art Farmer and Bobby Bryant amongst the trumpets and Al McKibbon on bass. Those were the days ! Then in the 1970s, recorded with Billy Cobham..
  16. The CD issue has one or two additional tracks I think - that was my first copy. All of the albums were blue label - I have a copy of the ‘Spectrum’.
  17. From the Columbia big box. Japanese Decca CD
