  1. Probably the first time that the Daily Mail has even mentioned jazz..
  2. Just arrived from Westbrookjazz - Mike Westbrook Orchestra Catania, 1992 2CDs. Considering that this was put together from a number of sources (DAT, reel to reel etc) it not only sounds great but is a huge tribute to the editing skills of the late Jon Hiseman. Quite a bit of ‘Citadel/Room 315’ on CD1. In a word - superb !
  3. Not to mention of course the minor masterpiece that is Ronnie Ross ‘Cleopatra’s Needle’, made during his London years.
  4. CD1 from the Mosaic box. Superb !
  5. Sad to say that he passed away recently, I understand (reported by Jazz Journal, although no info on wiki).
  6. I picked up the Japanese facsimile issue in Japan. Good move all round, as the chances of owning the original LP barring a lottery win are zippo . Wow, that disappeared fast ! Dutton Vocalion were listing it until quite recently, although they do tend to make stuff OOP pretty fast.
  7. Any idea why the ‘Rumasuma’ was held back on CD? Quite like that one.
  8. Both are out on CD (Just Friends on Vocalion), strongly recommended. I suspect that Gonsalves not at his best on the Deram thanks to his ‘fixer’, Jackie Sharpe. Kenny Wheeler sounds good on it though (although I agree that he adds a melancholy edge).
  9. Interesting if uneven session - and quite unlike the two LPs cut with Tubby Hayes.
  10. I need a big high wall unit like that one for my LPs and Mosaics. I don’t think there’s a room in my place (other than the loos) at the moment which hasn’t got shelving for them ! The Curator?
  11. Plus he sold me a Verve Elite on the old BNBB
  12. Happy Birthday !
  13. I used to see gigs with Ingrid Laubrock quite frequently when she was resident here in UK and a member of the London-based F-IRE Collective. I think the last group of hers I saw was ‘Sleepthief’ with Rainey and Liam Noble. Always an interesting and thoughtful player.
  14. What the h*ll is that ? Is it what we call ‘roast beef’?
  15. UK Columbia, mono UK Fontana, mono
  16. What I remember of the long intros to ‘Nardis’ when I saw that 1980 group was an unexpected (to me at the time) Slavic/Russian angle to the lines. Those intros went on for ages.
  17. Liberty blue/white
  18. and like an idiot I forgot to buy that one when it was affordable..
  19. Forgot just how good the sonics on this BGO CD reissue are.
  20. That Arista edition of the ‘Long Green’ sounds fabulous - bought it when it came out. Ozzie Cadena did a great job with the production, as usual.
  21. Considering that original LPs of these will knock you back about £3000 for the two - a good deal !
  22. Shepp is coming up at the LJF. Tempted but the logistics are not favourable. This UK Impulse from the late 60s seems to be a continuation of the HMV vinyls. Garrod and Lofthouse non-gatefold cover and EMI vinyl. I remember that I used to have a 70s US pressing of this with a cutout - sold it to the guys at Mole for about £1.
  23. The Holy Grail...
