I’d forgotten that the sale was about to end and that that set was on ‘special’ (at least in the US - by the time it gets over here with all the tax and shipping it’s not so special). Kicking myself for holding off but at least I now have the set (hopefully) at about the same total cost.
I guess there can’t have been too many left as this was a ‘last call’ limited run after the set had gone AWOL.
The email I got from Mosaic this afternoon had a note on there confirming that it had all gone.
Wanting the Goodman set, I went straight over to jazzmessengers and snagged what looks to be their last set. Possibly the last Goodman Mosaic for sale on the planet.
The ‘Jazzin the Black Forest’ DVD by Crippled Dick Hot Wax includes a video of the Hampel group with Manfred Schoof playing a track from that LP accompanying visuals of a ladies fashion show in the middle of a housing estate with washing lines ! How did that get approved/funded ?
I’m finding that Linda Ronstadt’s singing on this impresses. Unexpected !
Roswell Rudd and Gato also standouts. As is Don Cherry (fleeting but brilliant).
CD1 more stately and in the style of Bley’s 1970s JCOAs/ECMs. Echoes on Mingus at times.
CD2 more abstract with freakouts. Jack Bruce more prominent.
Arthur Brown and Ed Dipple..(but not MG)
Pretty amazing !
incidentally - that AB ‘Fire’ performance when broadcast on Top Of The Pops (1967/68?) scared the beejeesus out of me, back in the day
There seem to be plenty of affordable CD versions on discogs.
Just checked my shelves and it turns out I have the CD box version as well as the LP box.
Heard bits of it in a shop the other day. First impressions are that it is better than ‘The Epic’, less OTT. Interesting to hear a cover version of ‘Hub-Tones’, which sounded nice.
