  1. Definitely Bryant, Grey and Holley for sure. I assume all of these guys were over there at that time for the Nice Festival.
  2. Strange - didn’t get a Gazette email from them this week.
  3. Sad news. I will spin ‘Agharta’ today in his memory, RIP. Wasn’t he also musical director and svengali for Madonna at some stage?
  4. Early 1960s - 1961 I think. Not too long before Dameron passed away.
  5. I’m sure his essay for the Joy Marshall CD will be equally enlightening too - given that she features in the Tubby Hayes bio that he authored. I look forward to reading it.
  6. Similar to the whistle blowing on ‘Live at the Lighthouse’ - adds to the party atmosphere and live feel.
  7. Yes - CD1 includes pretty well a re-run of the ‘Gyroscope’ LP about a week after the Morgan studio recording and is equally brilliant. CD2 has recordings also from the 1975 Gyroscope group with Mathewson in place of Jeff Clyne from the earlier group. All of this material is unissued and came from the personal archive of Gordon Beck - check out that thread on the Hoffman Forums concerning how this release came about (it is a veritable saga with a happy ending). Add to that there is rare Beck Septet material from 1972, solo material and later stuff with Frank Ricotti and Stan Sultzmann. All topped off by a really superb booklet essay by Simon Spillett. End of sales pitch.. Audio quality is variable but in no cases is it offputting and in some instances is surprisingly excellent. Apparently the tapes had ageing/damp damage so considering this, the achieved audio quality is pretty impressive. Turtle have also just issued a single CD from this archive by the Beck trio plus ‘Johnny’ Mclaughlin (as per the ’Experiments With Pops’ LP) plus vocalist Joy Marshall. Haven’t yet heard it but it is on my list (of course).
  8. More from Turtle Records with an important Westbrook reissue. Turtle/Cherry Red are on a roll - more please !
  9. Superlative ! A major find from the Beck Estate, put out by the revitalised Turtle Records.
  10. I think this was one of those which were kept in the vault - the vinyl didn’t appear until the ‘Rare Groove’ series, to my knowledge. Great music and John Zorn’s sleeve notes are full of insight. Lexington 10” DG mono. Signed by Horace on one label !
  11. In the old LP days, 25-30 minutes per side was a luxury. Miles Davis CBS releases used to regularly deliver on that (good old Teo).
  12. Spot on. I remember reading this story in ‘Melody Maker’ - around 75/76.
  13. Yes, it would have been nice to hear longer band performances but given the remit, a fine tribute to Lou Gare I think. It was always good to see him on tenor in that band in tandem with Gary Bayley - more recent lineups have also had the excellent Alan Wakeman. Must mention the forthcoming ‘Granite’ commission by the Westbrooks - being premiered in Ashburton, Devon in the near future. Jazzsciven actually commissioned it, so I guess he will be there !
  14. I was in the audience for 2 or 3 of the tracks on this album (and fellow board member jazzscriven was probably there for all of them ). Agree that the first track is a standout and the sound is surprisingly good, considering that these were not official recordings.
  15. This was picked up recently on the off-chance and doesn’t disappoint.
  16. Yeah - he was pretty lean in the early 80s, doing that tai-chi on the bandstand. A really tight band when seen live, I agree.
  17. Looking forward to this one !
  18. ‘Profound Sound Trio’? Remember seeing them at Cheltenham, must have been around 2008/9. Dunmall did a couple of numbers on bagpipes.
  19. Does Billy Root count?
  20. Wasn’t there talk at one time of a big box with all of Mobley’s 60s sessions in it ? Probably just a wild rumour !
