  1. Plus the Monk/Coltrane of course..
  2. Laura Jurd's band 'Dinosaur' at the Turner-Sims, Southampton. Full house and deservedly so. More than a hint of Ian Carr in Laura's trumpet playing I think.
  3. I was a subscriber on the 45rpm series and have a numbered set. Certainly a nice thing to have, should play them more often though. Fortunately they were bought when the $ to £ was about 2 to 1 !
  4. I'll do a more detailed check in a few days Flurin - work has got in the way at the moment.
  5. Sorry, a bit slow to react to this one. Just did a quick check of 'Jazz Monthly' 1964 and there's a Val Wilmer picture of Kirk on the front of the Nov 1964 edition, so he was 'topical'. Also a writeup of the Parker tribute 'Bird Night' in the Xmas 1964 edition. That group also did a great 'Jazz 625' broadcast, fortunately preserved. Forgot to mention that the Pee Wee gig got a write-up too..
  6. Thanks for the info Chris. Hope to check out one of these too - would love to do the Chagford pub gig but heading over Dartmoor in February has a bit of the 'Hound of the Baskervilles' about it . Sounds like this project is in a similar vein to the 'Art Wolf' of several years back, in which case it should be great.
  7. Not the Big Band but just received a circular from Mike and Kate with details of their new project 'Paintbox Jane' (based on a Raoul Dufy theme), starting in Exeter Bike Shed Theatre on 19th Jan and then further dates in Chagford and Southampton. Small group with vocals and Alan Wakeman featured, according to the flyer.
  8. Happy Birthday Clifford !
  9. RIP - His writings on jazz were some of the earliest I remember reading, in the notes to the old Prestige 24000 twofers series. Thought they were brilliant even then. Sad that he won't be around any more but the fine text lives on.
  10. Sky Pilot Rev Timothy Farthing The Bish
  11. That's the trouble with 1s and 0s - they can disappear into the ether..
  12. Nothing imminent but I've got my bookings in to see Laura Jurd's 'Dinosaur' and Magnus Ostrom's group at the Turner Sims, Southampton.
  13. The cover art for these looks exactly like that Esquire reissue LP series from the 1980s, which I sadly didn't pick up on at the time. Many of the originals, of course, were on 78rpm and 10" LPs which are now collectors items.
  14. Thanks for this BFT, enjoyed it. Confirms also that I would have never got any of the tracks which totally stumped me in 1000 years, so an education !
  15. I'll have to dig out my Doug Dobell '77 label test pressings. £2 each from Mole ! If I'd got my act together earlier, could have offered them up for a temporary display berth in the Museum of London Dobells rack.
  16. UK Philips stereo. Cranked up, this gem sounds wonderfully crisp and well balanced. Fantastic !
  17. Presumably the same source as the similar titles for the Music Matters 2x45rpms? - if so, they should be great.
  18. Thanks for that - much to my regret I missed this exhibition, well worth seeing by the look of it. Pretty sure I walked past the shop when it was boarded up ready for demolition in 1981 and think I paid one or two visits before that as their paper and plastic bags look very familiar. Too bad that I didn't save them !
  19. Tommy Smith 'Peeping Tom' (Blue Note) Damn fine session with Jason Rebello (piano) and signed on the front by Tommy !
  20. Clarke/Boland Big Band 'At Her Majesty's Pleasure' (Black Lion). Another phenomenal sounding big band album on a very modest pressing.
  21. Howlin Wolf Muddy Waters Blind Lemon Pie
  22. Re-spin: My faith in vinyl now ressurected after azimuth aligning the Aro arm into its sweet spot. Struth !
  23. Those 'Club Diary' pages at the back of the old Jazz News are jaw-droppingly impressive. Hayes, Harriott, Morrissey, McNair et al as routine listings. Nice to see the more recent 'Jazz UK's on there. I have quite a few in hard copy - this will fill in some gaps. Cheers !
