  1. Not a deck to play rare Blue Note originals on...
  2. Wow - end of an era event for sure. Don't think I ever saw him in person at any UK events but his recorded voice often featured on intros at the London festivals (e.g. Capitol).
  3. Strangely, I don't think I've had any major issues with warped records for maybe 30 years, none that I can recall anyway. Maybe my deck arm is tolerant of them? - certainly I do recall issues in the late 70s in particular with those thin pressings that sometimes had to be returned to the shop. Labels that I recall having regular problems with include Cadet Argo reissues, US Columbia red label and Inner City. Here in the UK - DJM. Those Blue Note reissue series LPs could be iffy too, come to think of it.
  4. Thinking back, just recalled that it was upstairs in that area by the stairs near the second hand book shelf, one of a cluster of generally grubby 78rpm items in a cardboard box. It would have needed one heck of a clean and even then it set me off on an immediate sneezing fit. I remember thinking at the time that it was a shame it wasnt the CD version (which I've since got ). Probably late 1990s...
  5. I remember coming across a copy of this 78rpm folio at Mole Jazz back in the day - it was pretty dusty and far from pristine so in the interest of not sneezing every time I handled it (and not having 78rpm playback) I passed. It wasn't expensive either - maybe £10-15 ish.
  6. Sorry to read this. Glad I was able to catch a solo piano recital by Claude Williamson at an open air event about 20 years ago though. It was a very impressive performance. RIP and thanks for that. Interesting the comment above about him being a bit overlooked. The performance I saw was a bit low-key but there was no doubting the quality of the playing.
  7. Remember when this one was last broadcast. Hope they find some more in the archive..
  8. Two outstanding items on BBC last week - the documentary about The Somme and the New Zealand natural history series starter.
  9. Jaki Byard 'Freedom Together !' (SABA, stereo) CD player is out of action due to failed laser mech. so there will be lots more vinyl over the next few weeks. and .
  10. Gary Bartz 'Another Earth' (Milestone gatefold blue label, stereo)
  11. I've got a copy of that Alan Haven LP recorded at Annie Ross's club with Tony Crombie on drums somewhere in the shelves. His obituary was in JJI a few months ago and he was indeed married initially to Miss World 1965. Spinning Stanley Turrentine 'Look Out !' (BN 47W63rd DG mono. ear)
  12. Mistress Strumpet Miss Whiplash Norma Lamont
  13. Yep, the Quinichette was one of the later ones I picked up, along with the Collectors Disk (which only cost a few bucks).
  14. Thanks for that Flurin - I guess I need to look out for the Teagarden and Ray Brown then. I like that Brown/Jackson twofer so if that is the case it sounds essential. Took me 15 years to get to this stage so if it takes another 10 years or so to find these in a bargain bin I won't fret..
  15. I think the skiffle here was a sort of 'do your own thing' thing. Soap box and string to make a bass = low cost of entry and I guess when it started the WW2 rationing was only just being withdrawn. A bit of a craze - sort of the 'Pokemon Go' of its day. Now spinning - Miles Davis 'Agharta' (UK CBS 2LP). Again, my old copy benefitting from a cleaning machine brush up..
  16. Very sad to hear this. My favourite album that he was on is 'Doin' The Thang!' by Ronnie Matthews on Prestige. I'll give that a spin today. RIP. If I remember correctly he was here in the UK just a couple of years ago playing with the Sun Ra Arkestra at Glastonbury - it was on TV.
  17. Miles 'Bitches Brew' (UK CBS 2LP). My 40 year old copy still sounding immaculate !
  18. Even though I've probably got most of this on the vinyl 2LPs I am sure that Mosaic will do such a great job that it will be indispensable. This will go on the 'to do' list after the Beehive and Dial sets !
  19. Sounds nice - I wonder if that Teddy Reig essay was the one that was in the Basie Roulette sets?
  20. Looks like I am missing: Dinah Washington 'The Best in Blues' Jack Teagarden 'Think Well of Me' Louie Bellson 'Skin Deep' Ray Brown 'Bass Hit' Are any of those 'must haves'?
  21. Amazing to hear that Nanaimo even has a vinyl shop ! That ebay quote of the owner sounds familiar though - I can think of at least one coastal emporium round here whose shop stock is rubbish and who puts anything half decent on the bay.
