  1. RIP - a good innings for sure. Got to see him play solo once in Toronto and he did 'Robbin's Nest' of course.
  2. For the early 1960s, the Tubby Hayes bio by Simon Spillett covers the period well. The Dave Gelly book is pretty good too. For the early 1970s - definitely Ian Carr 'Music Outside'.
  3. 'Shelly Manne & His Men, Vol 4' (King, mono). With Charlie Mariano, Stu Williamson etc.
  4. Gerald Wilson Orchestra 'Moment Of Truth' (Pacific Jazz, mono) Mike Taylor 'Trio' (UK Columbia, stereo)
  5. Grey Man Major-Balls Edwina
  6. Really enjoying the book too - up to about Chapter 20. Some great stories and reminiscences, hard to put down once you have started.
  7. It's bottomless..
  8. 'Count Basie' (UK Vogue jazz double). Another one from the archive, new-testament band compilation of Roulette material that is included in the two Mosaic sets. Sound OK but the Mosaics are better..
  9. Ain't that the truth - starting with my Mosaic 'bucket list'...
  10. A fine evening ! Without my sat-nav working I would still be driving around outer Metro Manchester.. From what I can gather, looks like Val Wiseman has been running that particular show since the late 80s with various lineups. Looks like the tour extends over the North and East Midlands.
  11. I remember seeing him quite often in Canada, TV on 'Hockey Night'. Always came across as a good guy: level-headed no-BS Saskatchewan stock and a real Canadian iconic figure. RIP.
  12. George Russell 'The Stratus Seekers' (Dutch Fontana, Interdisc). Sonics outstanding ! James Last and Nana on JazzWest?
  13. A Naim Statement pre/power amp combo would also be on my list with a lottery win. Have heard one in action with a Linn LP12 and it is absolutely phenomenal. Not sure about the quarter million dollars price tag (US import version) though !
  14. I have that version as well (the sonics of the UK London issue are outstanding). Standing by to get 'torched' for commenting on virtue of format..
  15. That 'The Long Road' is a really good one, in excellent sound. - often play it. I think it cost me about £3 in the big Fantasy selloff. Second the recommendation.
  16. I've got an Applause copy (West Edmonton Mall, 50 cents Canadian i.e. zilch)..... and a mono original ! Not one I spin a great deal but nice to have.
  17. Not as much 'punch' as the real thing but - yes - they can be pretty good.
  18. Personally prefer 'Dusk Fire' after tending the garden waste bonfire.. Spinning: Cannonball Adderley 'Cannonball Enroute' (UK Mercury mono, factory sample)
  19. If ever I ever win the lottery I might take a punt on a Te Kaitora Rua..
  20. There was that period from the early 80s through early 90s that he seemed to be omni-present in live gigs during that period which I caught. First Woody Shaw, then Blakey, Tony Williams Quintet and his own Wingspan group. Certainly one of the great talents during that period and I never heard anything but very good performances by him.
  21. Coltrane/Shepp 'New Thing At Newport' (Impulse red/black, Van Gelder). Another one from BillF.
  22. A sad day and truly iconic figure for as long as I've been aware. It will be strange that he is no longer 'around'. RIP.
  23. That must have been on the same tour I saw him on - your gig was probably the next stop !
  24. Bankers (misprint) Spivs Charlatans
  25. Francy Boland 'Flirt and Dream' (SABA, stereo)
