I was too-ing and fro-ing between Mariano and Surman and went for Mariano. The sound was more the former to my mind but the phrasing the latter. Based on your hints would this be from 'Miroslav Vitous Group' on ECM with Surman and Jon Christensen?

Track 4 - Walt Dickerson? Track 5 - Joe Loss and His Orchestra with special guest Albert Ayler? Track 6 - Vinyl, 'Out Of This World'. Freddie Hubbard with the Walter Benton Quintet. Both Freddie and Wynton Kelly very recognisable. Track 8 - 'Mirage', Don Rendell/Ian Carr Quintet. From 'Change Is'. Track 10 - I would have said Donald Byrd, sounds like a Savoy session, Hank Jones on piano. Ozzie Cadena production? Track 11 - Charlie Mariano on MPS? Sounds either Nordic or German.. Nice selection ! Track 7 - I thought Fresu too..

Jazzbo - I had a similar experience with Sam Rivers. Couldn't have been nicer chatting with him after a gig, I agree he was a very warm character. Andrew Hill also added to my list too. Both of these guys hugely impressed me in person - irrespective of any music they made. Cedar Walton was also a very pleasant guy to chat with.

Very true ! These will be good..

For me, Hank Jones was a standout. Delightful guy. Elvin was too. I've found most musicians very welcoming and friendly when approached. One exception was Tony Williams but suspect that I caught him at a bad time (shortly after he had finished an energetic set). Never met Miles but suspect that if I had I would have been given the Ewan McGregor treatment..

Smalls/Mezzrow's website - live streams and A/V library

Have signed up with Smalls and watched the music from there and Mezzrow early this morning. Particularly enjoyed the Johnny O'Neal late solo set at Mezzrow. Video quality great and the audio more than acceptable for me. Never thought I'd see the day when you could catch top notch NYC club sets live from the English countryside ! -
What live music are you going to see tonight?

I'll be checking out the Smalls live video feed. Gets my vote ahead of the Cheltenham Fest ! -

Read somewhere that he had an attachment with the Banff Summer School, which might explain his regular visits.

Mainstream cinema - one of the main multiplex chains over here. Four viewing times a day for at least a week at my nearest local, with other venues available !

Thanks for the advisory - I've been meaning to get hold of that Braxton set for some time so pounced while it was still possible. Would have hated to miss that one. Also gone for a copy of that Roy Ayers single on Mighty Quinn to squeeze in within the shipping limit. -
Chuckling in my seat when the Schaap bit came on. It was either his actual voice or a pretty good imitation. That whole first 5-10 minutes of the film were most entertaining. Of course Miles nerds like me were querying just why the TV film reconstruction of Osaka had what looked like a Dave Liebman clone in the style of Vienna 1973 in place of Sonny Fortune..

Yep, 'Black Satin'. I thought it was fun - even at the £10 they rip us off over here..

Get with the program ! -
Yep, I'll be going for a replacement of my (now vintage) XX-2.

Sadly, I guess so. Nobody under 40ish at my viewing. I'm putting it down to the fact that it was a Sunday afternoon in a provincial town but even so - a sad indication of the demographics. Shame, as there's much in this film that the younger crowd can enjoy..

Just Scottish, English and Japanese for me. Have decided new cart definitely now needed (ouch) plus a tune up/fettling and service for the Scottish gizmo by my trusted guru so it's CDs only now for a few weeks plus bread and jam for meals. Should be awesome once it's back though !

Strong continuity from 'Westering Home' to the likes of 'The Amazing Adventures of Simon Simon'. Very strong Devonian and maritime folk influence on 'Westering..'

Having just seen it (audience of 6 and one departed half way through..) I have to say - I really liked it ! Don Cheadle's performance first rate - particularly as the later Miles. The early scenes in the brownstone with the cockroaches scuttling around can't have been too far from the truth ! If there was one weakness maybe it was the recreated earlier 50s and 60s scenes, which didn't have quite the narrative and flow of the 1979 bit. I appreciate though that a romantic narrative does help with box office. I did particularly enjoy the (background, on the TV) recreation of the 1975 Osaka Hall concert right at the beginning and the telephone chat with Phil Shaap. Spot on ! The soundtrack was the real standout. Couldn't have done a better job myself with the selection of music to intersperse with the 'action'. Really liked the ending too featuring Herbie and Wayne ! Is it only me or did that slimy Columbia exec who nicked the rehearsal tape look a bit like Mel Lewis?...

Have both of these on Island vinyl and agree that they are good - nice to see them available on CD. 'Morning Glory' in particular is a gem.
