  1. Yikes what a "classy" cover haha... Nice album - where else can you hear Sam Rivers with Mongo Santamaria ! Nat Adderley 'Sayin' Somethin'' (UK Atlantic mono - Polydor pressing) Side 1 a bit ropey with Tony Hatch covers etc. but side 2 kicks ass..
  2. Yeah, that's what I thought too. Interesting to read that John Stevens was on the staff at one time. I wonder when that would have been?
  3. Milt Jackson 'That's The Way It Is' (UK Impulse stereo, factory sample)
  4. JC Hogan JC Penney Penny Dreadful
  5. Hilton Ruiz 'Strut' (RCA Novus)
  6. No probs chaps - glad you enjoyed it.
  7. Some interesting recollections here - http://www.kingscross.co.uk/KXV-2007-242-01
  8. Home - My copy turns out to be NY USA stereo with the 'ear', no deep groove. I'm playing 'Love and Hate' at the moment. Just a few soft crackles towards the beginning and end of this track but nothing significant. The sonics on this pressing sound pretty nice on the whole. I'll see if I can find/dig out my King pressing later on. Have a 'Music Matters' 45rpm copy to check against as well.
  9. Don't recall such an issue on my copy (which is a mono NY USA with DG on one side) but I'll see if I can find it this weekend and check. I also have a King pressing which I'm pretty sure is super-silent.
  10. I hate that cover. The CD mentions that there is a restaurant (somewhere in Brazil) which has copies of it plastered all over the walls. Not the place to eat then !
  11. Was that at Cheltenham about 5-6 years ago? If so I caught that gig - had forgotten that Kenny was in the lineup. That's right. Another occasion where we've sat in the same room oblivious! Amazing ! Even more amazing was the fact that I'd forgot Kenny was in that concert..
  12. I'm still amazed that the Donaldson set is still for sale, considering that this was one of the ones that went OOP very quickly.
  13. Was that at Cheltenham about 5-6 years ago? If so I caught that gig - had forgotten that Kenny was in the lineup. First time I heard him on record, thinking about it, was on Anthony Braxton's 'NY Fall 1974'. Not his most typical playing.
  14. I think the most recent time I've seen him was with his Big Band for the 80th Birthday gig. It was sublime, although he was a bit on the frail side - some fantastic new big band arrangements featured proving that his arranging gets better and better. Before that - a gig from the 75th Birthday Big Band with Norma Winstone and also around that time a concert with the group featuring Lee Konitz, John Taylor and John Abercrombie (I think). I also saw him about 15 years ago with Fred Hersch. Oh - and a performance at NorthSea some years ago. First time I saw him was with Azimuth plus Tony Coe back in the 1980s.
  15. Thumbs up here for the Jazz Crusaders. Even though I have most of the music on (mainly Japanese) vinyl I find I play this set quite a lot.
  16. Duke Jordan/Gigi Gryce Quartet 'Jazz Laboratory Series' (Signal, mono)
  17. First I have heard of its status as an endangered species. I am thinking about this one myself. Same here.
  18. Looks like I need to grab that Artie Shaw !
  19. Followed by nice find no. 3..
  20. One of today's nice finds. A UK mono 'Way Out West' on Vogue - sounds superb. Followed by the second good find. Art Farmer/Gigi Gryce on Esquire. Cover art by Diz Disley.
  21. Yes, fingers crossed. There is more information on the benefit gig held last week on Richard Williams' blog: http://thebluemoment.com/2014/08/17/postscript-a-benefit-for-kenny-wheeler/
  22. Happy Birthday MsPepper !
  23. More like...
  24. The lineup I saw was in 1981/82 and had (in addition to John Blake) Joe Ford, McCoy, John Lee and Wilby Fletcher. Around the time they did those Elektra Musician LPs. I've got the feeling I went back for the second night and also remember Blake wearing a very striking white suit. The album 'Horizon' gives a very good indication of how they sounded and the excitement of that gig.
