  5. Bump. Just picked up the Paul Bley and the Lacy/Waldron. Will have to get hold of the 'Emergency' and possibly the Burrell too before they disappear into a black hole.
  6. Yeah ! Kirk's a great guy - his enthusiasm for music is infectious. Sounds like a fantastic evening.
  7. I don't think it's Lloyd's best for ECM, but if you like the other ECMs you'll probably like this one. Some great stuff on here -- "Blood Count", the Silvio Rodriguez tunes, "Amazing Grace", the flute tune on the second disc. Parts of the second disc ramble. Guy Just received this. I haven't gotten to the second disc yet, but I'm really lovin' what I'm hearing on the first one. I'm not a particularly big fan of the ECM stuff in general, but something about the LLoyd/Abercrombie combination speaks to me in just the right spot. Up again for this thread. Have been spinning 'Lift Every Voice' for the last few days and really like it. Started on CD2 (the one with the great 'Blood Count' on it) and haven't even got to CD1 yet. I find Geri Allen's playing on this album particularly effective - thoughtfull, unpredictable and reminds me a lot of Alice Coltrane's 60s style. Anyone expecting lots of down-home blues on this album is going to be disappointed - however, it is extremely lyrical. John Abercrombie also fits into this style most effectively and as mentioned, he sounds good in unison with Lloyd. Penguin guide gives it 3 stars - I think that's a wee bit ungenerous and it merits at least a '3.5'.

  12. Some good CD finds today: 3 nice 'Free America' titles - Clifford Thornton 'Panther and the Lash', the Mal Waldron/Steve Lay and the Paul Bley 'Improvisie' Charles Lloyd's 'Lift Every Voice' 2CD on ECM The Mingus 'Complete Tijuana Moods' 2CD on RCA Bluebird and Kenny Barron Trio 'Live at Bradleys Vol 2' each as-new for £6 each.
  13. The coolest solution: Yes, I'm thinking of getting a fan to stick next to the NAP 250. Mustn't crank the volume so loud. Maybe it needs a re-cap?
  14. Duke Pearson 'Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band' (BN Liberty blue/white stereo). This LP is so damn hot that the power amp cut out due to overheat half way through 'Straight Up and Down'
  15. :blush2: (hangs head in shame...)
  16. I was a little bit underwhelmed - I got the Conn a while ago (from Dan I think?). Must spin it again.
  17. Whilst some of us are having breakfast
  18. Didn't know there was a book on it. I only remember seeing the TV series put out by BBC - which gets sporadic episode repeats. This is the one I got, I think: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rock-Family-Trees-...6969&sr=1-1 Not sure I actually got that 2-in-1 or just a one volume edition, but I don't mind... it ends mostly around 1980 (meaning you only get the beginnings of bands like Talking Heads or Patti Smith Group covered), but that's not a big issue I think, as mostly I'll be interested in exploring more 60s and early 70s stuff anyway. On the other hand, it seems very "white"... rock in general is white of course (white college boys I guess), but where it gets most fascinating to me is where it crosses over to blues and country and gospel and folk and soul and whatever, such as with The Band, for instance, where Curtis Mayfield becomes and influence etc. That's not part of the book, alas, as the book is sort of straight and person-based, not influence based (it would be a tough job to do such "trees" going by influences rather than by personal continuity... though it would be endlessly fascinating I guess). Thanks for the info on this - it obviously ties in with that old TV series of the same name, which came out originally in the late 80s/early 90s I think. I remember Pete Frame being credited on the programmes. Some of those programmes actually touched on the jazz scene of the 60s/70s when people like Chris Spedding and bands such as Hatfield and the North and Egg were mentioned. Quite fascinating to us students of this scene. Will add this to my 'reading list'.

  22. Must have been a web site error--just got a shipping notice for both sets, and the page for the Boogie Woogie Select no longer indicates that it's backordered. And they both arrived this afternoon! Wow - that's quick.
