WORD !
That was my favourite track when I bought a vinyl of this one back in about 1978 on the Atlantic 'That's Jazz' series (RIP).
What a beautiful performance - marvellous combination of Coles on flugel and Henderson on what must be alto flute, very sensitively scored by Herbie. Johnny Coles has a fabulous tone on this one (hasn't he always though).
Some of the album is a bit boogaloo early 70s 'of its time' but enjoyable, nevertheless. I have to admit though that on the whole I prefer 'The Prisoner'.
Must dig out that Atlantic UK vinyl. Over the years I've tended to play this one more on the 'Mwandishi Recordings' Warner Brothers 2CD set.
Its always been something of a favourite. First vinyl copy was in the late 70s with a UA/Transatlantic UK issue, then the early CD version in the late 80s. Picked up an original BN US deepgroove vinyl some years ago.
One of Francis Wolff's photos of the session hangs framed in my lounge - with the 3 front-line horns.
I bought the 'Get Up With It' and 'Big Fun' twofers not long after they were first issued in the UK, some of the first Miles I ever bought. 'Special price' of £2.99, 2LPs for the price of one, I seem to recall.
The first time I put 'Rated X' on the turntable was a bit of a shock though...
I think my folks thought that I'd bought a Hammer Films soundtrack so took care to listen through headphones only for many years.
Just been watching the McCoy - Bartz, Ravi Coltrane, Charnet Moffet and Eric Gravatt. Schmokin !
Have the Max on disk ready to watch at a future date. Must get hold of that Dorge, sounds good. And the Lester Bowie - is that one still being seeded?
Check out the super-duper Jazz CD shop in Bath. Around £6 a shot !
Do you mean the Music matters shop in a tiny alley? I haven't been there for ages but £6 is a good deal.
Yes, Yves - Jonathan (who took over after Mike, the previous owner) has quite a few of the recent ones on display at £6. Great shop - we are lucky to have it on the 'doorstep'.
15th Sept 1957 - a truly landmark Blue Note session was recorded at Van Gelder's.
A good reason to raise a glass to 'Trane, Lee Morgan, Curtis Fuller, Paul Chambers, Kenny Drew, Philly Joe, RVG and Lion and Wolff.
Lee Morgan 'The Rumproller' (BN NY USA mono). A very under-rated Morgan Blue Note, I think.
Herbie Hancock 'Takin' Off' (BN NY USA mono, DG both sides)
will you stop repeating old news please? I thought it was yet a further delay first! let's hope there won't be any!
Not 'old news' as far as I'm concerned. Just received an email from them to this effect to confirm it for sure.
I guess if magnetic tape had an infinite permeability and uniform domains always in alignment, we might get there ! (and with perfect tape stored in perfect field-free isolation)
