  1. I'll listen to him today on the Bobby Hutcherson 'Mosaic Select'. Fine player who has brought much listening pleasure over the years - here's wishing him the very best.
  2. I hope they are not printed in yellow text on orange background, as in one of the previous Miles box sets (don't remember which one) The worst must have been the 'Plugged Nickel' notes, which ran all over the place wth font changes galore !
  3. My copy of the 'Garrick's Fairground - Mr Smith's Apocalypse' by Michael Garrick and chorus has arrived. This one is totally uncategorisable. Can't really compare it at all with Andrew Hill's 'Lift Every Voice' from a similar vintage. There's echos of English music hall, fairground organs and eclesiastical music in all this - and some of it is not dis-similar to Mike Westbrook's vocal + brass projects and maybe bits of 'Solid Gold Cadillac'. This one will take a bit of digesting. I see in the notes that the 'Garrick's Fairground' EP was John Peel's record of the week for one week way back when it was issued, then it completely sank without trace. Based on first listen, the EP is the finest thing on the CD, with some superb Norma Winstone vocal work. Have also got hold of the 'Cold Mountain' - can't believe I've held off for so long before getting this.
  4. Hmm - looks like a nice big fat booklet full of essays in there..
  5. John Player Sunday League cricket circa 1970 looking at the sweaters they are wearing and the general air of 'laid-back' I think.
  6. Jimmy Giuffre, Pee Wee Russell etc. 'Historic Concert at Music Inn' (Atlantic black label)
  7. Jeez, some people have all the luck. And that would have been around the time the Roundhouse was in full swing with its 'happenings'. By the time I got there punk was in full flow and the Roundhouse was just hanging in there. Soho of course has cleaned up loads since my day. Couldn't walk through there without being propositioned every day back then (surely they could gave seen I was a broke student ). "Ronnies" sure aint the same though (£1 admission for students or members during the week).
  8. I agree. Even though most of the material is now out on domestic CDs, this is still a great set and the booklet is both well written and moving. A gem !
  9. How could I forget it - used to walk past it almost daily on a commute into the West End from Charing Cross but don't think I ever bought much there and I was usually in a rush with no time walking past ! I've got the feeling it was on St Martin's Lane just South of Cambridge Circus and yes, it wasn't far from Ray's old place (late lamented) on Shaftesbury Ave. Rays back then was still called 'Colletts' I think. What an amazing selection of jazz vinyl places there was in London in those days. Rays/Colletts, Mole, Honest Jon's (3 branches), Dobells, All Change, Chris Wellard just for starters. Not even taking into account HMV and Virgin.
  10. 'Wally' would be Wally Traugot, who did many of those early Conn vinyls.
  11. Have ordered the Garrick - and also a few of the bargains listed in the jazz sale (Tony Crombie, Ken Moule, Shake Keane etc.) whilst they are still with us. I see the Garrick CD also includes the tracks from the 'Garrick's Fairground' EP. The only copy of that I've ever seen went for over £100.
  12. Sorry, king ubu - I don't have the discography in digital form. Maybe someone else on the board has it?
  13. Something tells me that with video also to be put on there, I'm going to use up "160" Gbytes without much trouble. Having said that, I can't seem to transfer the video stuff from dime so far.. Nice to have all of the Mosaic Selects readily accessible in one place. I must admit that I-Tunes and the user-friendliness of the touch-wheel/display are big plusses so far. Apple have got that bit of engineering worked out real well.
  14. Bobby Hutcherson - Mosaic Select CD3 Thanks to Hans for this !
  15. Thanks - Yes, recall Godding and Khan being in the lineup for 'Solid Gold Cadillac'. Norwegian 'Compendium' label eh? Talk about obscure.
  16. The Holman/Russo set absolutely smokes. Recommended without reservation. Just spinning Johnny Richards - Mosaic Select CD2'. Superb !
  17. I'm looking forward to the Michael Garrick - never heard that particular one. The Bob Downes I have on an Openian LP which I think I picked up for £8. It's definitely worth picking up. 'Turn Circle' I have on my orange-label UK CBS. A nice session - more 'traditional' than anticipated. The 'Mirage' is one I've never heard of either. Lives up to its name...
  18. Just noticed this on AAJ: "September 2007 «28» The Complete On The Corner Sessions boxed set was earmarked for release September 25 in the US, but production problems have caused a delay of a week. The official US release date is now October 2. The UK and German release dates have been put back to October 29. SOURCE: http://www.milesbeyond.com/ (Check the 'News' section...and also the book for fans of Miles 70's period)" Good ol' Europe..
  19. Very nice - Tony, was that the Honest Jons at Camden Town or Portobello? In 1981/82 I lived just down the road from that Camden store in a student residence and it was packed to the rafters downstairs (almost like a Blue Note grotto I recall, with great stuff - no originals but lots of brown cover twofers/blue label imports which I snapped up). Unfortunately I wasn't into Sun Ra/avante garde jazz or then and the King Blue Notes were too pricey at £8-10 a pop. I remember seeing the Sun Ra Saturns in the racks but they were a big blank to me at the time. Damn ! Sadly, the Camden store closed many years ago. It switched ownership with a bit of the downstairs jazz lingering on until about 5 years ago when they closed down to make way for yet another bimbo fashion/accessories joint. I checked out what was left of the 'sale' a few days before it was closed - sad to see. The Portabello store (relocated) is still there and the people are very helpful. Their mail order is good too so I think I will order the CD 'Disco 3000' from them.
  20. I've a number of originals of the albums on the Lou set but it would be nice to have the music on an I-Pod. Don't think I have any Kings/Toshibas of this stuff. Last day of the shipping deal for any more late movers like me.
  21. Just picked up the new I-Pod 160Gb Classic today and loading it full of Conns and Mosaics.. Had to track one down at an Apple store (strange buying experience - no cashpoints - just a load of roving sales bods with laptops and card readers. Total chaos ). Not quite yet on full distribution here in the UK. First impressions are very good indeed in terms of usability. In terms of sound, vinyl it aint..
  22. Sorry to read that, Erik. I should have snagged a couple for my US buddies but with US/UK shipping it's all a bit impractical. I think I paid around $90 Cdn + tax for it back in the day (mid-90s) with a 20% discount deal, so this is/was one heck of a price. Even with the markout.
  23. Is this of interest to anyone? Shame I've already got it. Fantastic set. Joe Henderson Milestone Set
  24. Thanks - I'll grab hold of a copy next time I see it.
