  3. Thanks for checking, Porcy - this seems to be a fault on every 50th St pressing of this one I've ever come across. My copy is archival quality - it was played just once or twice with great care by the previous owner, a producer/critic (heck, even the rice paper inner is in near mint). It seemed so bizarre that the sound on side 2 was so inferior - what I hear is low signal/noise (especially for a deep groove) and a generally 'thin' sound. Especially pronounced on that great track, 'Super Jet'. Ah well. As you say, the music is fabulous anyway and side 1 is the 'dog's bollocks'. Still a wonderful LP
  4. I remember paying about $95 for the 65-68 set in the US (at Tower's late lamented Sunset Boulevard store, if memory is right), with discount and about 10 years ago - so taking into account general inflation over that time £49.99 starts to sound pretty good !
  5. Nice bit o' pimp art for the living room. :rsmile:
  6. Stomu Yamash'ta's East Wind - 'Music From The Film 'One By One'' (Island pink/white label)
  7. Fantastic, thanks for the heads up. I was at that Bath Festival concert and I got to chat with Andrew after the performance. The only copy of the broadcast I have is on cassette so it will be nice to upgrade. The band has Ron Horton and Nasheet Waits as well as a stellar lineup of young UK musicians. No doubt someone will make it available on 'dime' shortly.
  8. I have the 'Rejoicing' in a US ECM pressing (I think) and the sound is pretty spectacular ! Particularly the version of Horace's 'Lonely Woman'. Recommended ! The 'Night Glo' I have in a German pressing. Very 'MOR' and FM-friendly but a real nice laid-back listen. Nothing profound but I quite like it. 'Sextet' I have somewhere too but can't find that one.
  9. Nice . What's the pressing like on side 2? Sorry for the delay, I was in Turkey. Holiday Side 2 is good, as far I remember. Why are you asking it? Welcome back. I was asking re: the side 2 as every copy I've ever heard had less than great pressing quality on the last track. Not sure why this is.
  10. Hey, that's my brain too this fine Friday morning !
  11. Didn't know he was also a crate digger in his 'spare' time.
  12. vielen dank! (by last batch of conns you mean most recent bunch, or? we have not yet learned that there won't be another...? Yeah, the one with Kenny Cox, Frank Foster, Jimmy Smith, Stanley Turrentine and Andrew Hill. Plattenladen.com has all of them listed for less than 8 Euros (yes, even the Conns) - cool! Just ordered all 5 at slightly over £5 each. Can't complain at that (free shipping from Germany too).
  13. Up for more air for this great thread.
  14. Woody Shaw CD2. Inspired by a recent viewing of that great Griffin/Shaw 'Subway' video.
  15. Just pre-ordered myself on Amazon on behalf of birthday benefactor. Strangely enough it came up with an estimated shipment date of 3rd Sept.

  17. I still think it's better than Jazzwise, as it seems JR is less corporate and has more of an individual voice. Agreed. 'Jazzwise' is worth the reads but comes across too much as a 'style' mag at times - and lacking a critical voice. Sort of an 'Hello' magazine for the jazz punters. Having said that, I also quite enjoy it and usually pick up a copy.
  18. Jazz Review has become a favourite of mine over time - some very good recent career appraisal articles on the likes of Dick Morrissey, Harold McNair and John Dankworth which would never see the light of day I think in 'Jazzwise'. I'd agree though that some of the articles (such as the ones on 'hi fi' as previously mentioned) are irrelevant at best though - it seems to aspire to something like the old 'Jazz Monthly' of the 1960s but without the critical mass of content required. Still, I enjoy reading it.
  19. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000TLMWMO/ Great stuff ! The best news all week. ye olde royal hycropite! The person buying me the set hasn't quite yet pulled the trigger - I wisely asked them to hang fire until I could find a better price than Amazon's previous £76. Trigger will now be pulled !
