I’ve certainly never come across it on CD. My copy is a King LP furnished by Mr Tanno. This recording is actually one of my favourites by the Jazz Crusaders. Talking of the Jazz Crusaders - I came across an Applause version of ‘Powerhouse’ today (gory red cover)” Never seen that issue before.

They had all of those AP Impulses as well but I averted my gaze from those !

Post-dental surgery haul. Second hand a couple of really nice Nancy Wilson Capitols (including one with Gerald Wilson), a minty first press Chick Corea ‘Return to Forever’ on German ECM and new copy of Bill Evans’ Oil Can Harry’s double on Craft Recordings. Well chuffed . Passed on the Miles ‘Live Evil’ Black Friday reissue.

Was looking forward to that one by the ‘Granite’ Band near Newton Abbot - ah well, hopefully some more next year. Alas I’m allergic to London these days so couldn’t get to see the ‘Westbrook Blake’. Bet it was good.

Hi Frank ! Thanks for the reminder on the videos. I need to check more of those out. The ‘Starcross’ CD too. I have the LIVE and need to give it another listen. Hopefully some more SW UK Westbrook gigs in 2022 when things have calmed down a bit. Stay safe !

This thread reminds me of my favourite JJ moment. At one club I got to sit right in front of JJ and he spent the set operating his slide right above my head ! With great precision, I might add - fortunately I stayed rigid in place. JJ also signed a club flyer for me but that might have been a different appearance. That was the time he had Renee Rosnes in his group.

Definitely on my Ogun want list. I see it is back in print. That cover design always reminds me of ‘Agharta’.

Sort of similar - I remember a track being played on Humphrey Lyttelton’s Monday night ‘Best of Jazz’ show. It was ‘Horace’ I think. No crap played on that show.

Leeds of that era sounds like a transplanted Kansas City of the North (oh hang on - that was Newcastle..) Sad that it didn’t last. I guess much of it was down to Ernie Garside and his booking connections.

The Birch Book does mention that Slide played Club 43 in Feb 1968, teamed with Cecil Payne. Interestingly, Griffin played the same club with a quartet the following week. No mention of the Royal Exchange Theatre gig so I guess it was post-1970. There is even a picture of Slide and Payne on the Club 43 date.

Bought the 2LP vinyl when it came out and it has been a favourite ever since. I recall at the time that it was something of a comeback to jazz for JJ, who had been concentrating on Hollywood studio work for much of the 70s I think. It was welcome to see him back - and on form. Fantasy also put out that CD of bonus material from the same concert, many years later. Some good stuff on ‘Pablo Live’ - including the Milt Jackson/Teddy Edwards, Freddie Hubbard at Northsea and the Joe Pass Long Beach.

The text for the Rendell Carr Vol 1 says CD-R in the website note, Note sure about the South sets.

Sad news but a good long life. Hope that the NY based tribute Octet keeps playing his arrangements and keeping this music alive. Saw him just the once - not playing but conducting an all-star orchestra in Rotterdam. Class act and a great trombonist and arranger. The session he did on MPS with Dexter Gordon is particularly good. I’ll have to check the Manchester Jazz Bible to see if that one is mentioned.

The only thing to watch out for is that Vol 1 of the Rendell Carr direct from R&B is now a CD-R. Must have sold out. Recently put in an order for some of the latest releases, including Vol 2. I note also that the 1967 Dick Morrissey material is not in either of the Harry South boxes, although the earlier material is. The Jimmy Witherspoon with Morrissey looks tempting but I went for the Michael Garrick at this time, as well as the Ronnie Scott and SME.

I’ve seen him a few times - with Trio 3 (open air at Lincoln Center) and with his solo show (club performance on a Western Canada tour).

Yeah, a strong session even considering Horace’s very high standards and Joe Henderson in particularly good form, as is Woody S. With ‘African Queen’ you are there on that sweaty river jungle chugboat. Good JJ too - wish he’d recorded more with Horace.

Pristine, Liberty mono copy. Honest Jon’s from back in the day, one of a batch they found ‘in the back of some cupboard in the US’. Change from £20 - those were the days !

This one comes to mind from UK budget label DJM. Title as unfortunate as the cover. Another ‘gem’ from DJM..
