  1. Don Wilkerson 'Preach Brother' (BN NY USA stereo) George Braith 'Extensions' (BN NY USA stereo). Liberty-era pressing but sounds spectacular !
  2. I'm surprised by that comment as the few Inner City LPs I have are all good pressings with a nice full sound. They weren't as bad as Trip, but their pressings were generally pretty mediocre (cheap vinyl, I would guess). Yep, usually badly warped too. I have two of the Art Farmer East Winds on this label. They sound suprisingly good - but I bet the East Winds are 2000% better.
  3. Probably right. Quite a cult following on his home turf - particularly in Montreal and Toronto.
  4. Just heard that over here in the UK, the Freeview (terrestrial, non-Sat TV) trial of about 400 households in London to put HD channels on the service has been a success. Hopefully therefore they will start to add HD channels to the digital Freeview service (he says, hopefully). Anything to avoid the Murdoch $$
  5. Just picked up the two-CD 'At The Prelude'. Damn nice, really perfect music for a Sunday. They've done a fine job with the sound on this one, an exemplary release IMO. Would have loved to have been in the audience for this Red Garland gig. May there be more to come in this ilk !
  6. I can recommend this DVD ! Picture is quite respectable and the sound is pretty nice. Both concerts are killer - anyone into the 'Sorcerer' and 'Nefertiti' albums will like these performances. Fascinating watching Tony W. stoke the fire behind Wayne (who is on great form). Yep, the blurb on the back of the DVD about Carter joining in '66 is BS.
  7. Wise decision, prices should come down, and new technology will help, but if you are in hurry... BTW, I didn't know about HD Sky, are all the channel broadcasted in HD, or only football? Their HD service includes several Sky channels (inc. sport) in Hi Def plus BBC Hi Def and probably a few others. Hate paying Murdoch anything though ! My suspicion is that the number of free Hi Def channels on Astra will increase over the next year or two.
  8. Looking forward to pumping a high def feed into my plasma TV. Thinking of getting a Sat HD Freeview box so that I can access the BBC high def service on Astra without paying Rupert Murdoch his wad for his extortionate Sky HD service. Will wait until prices come down a bit.
  9. Picked this one up to day - not taking any chances, even if there's no imminent mention of it being withdrawn in Europe. Suspect I might have most of the material from the 'dime' site already.
  10. Frank Ricotti Quartet 'Our Point Of View' (UK CBS Realm stereo)
  11. 'The Tal Farlow Album' (Norgran DG mono)
  12. Eric Dolphy 'Outward Bound' (Esquire) Cover art by John Marshall !
  13. 'Sunshine Superman' - saved by Eric Kloss.
  14. Ah, red wine and good jazz vinyl. A combination made in heaven !
  15. Had a trip there some years ago as part of a visit to the Nato place (yawn). Two things that stood out were the big City Sqare with lots of great open-air ale houses. The other was that windy old lane (can't remember what it's called) full of sea-food establishments. The 'Fruits de Mer' on offer were fabulous, along with the mussels !
  16. how many opportunities does one get to see the North Sea? Wow - that's a tourist attraction? Brussels is great for restaurants (especially seafood - check out the mussels) and beer. The 'Mannekin Pis' is totally anti-climactic (but then I'm not a great fan of midget urinator fountains ). Plenty of good CDs stores to check out too.
  17. Pardon the diversion Brownie but there's some great Melba Liston on that Quincy Jones 1960 Band DVD. Recommended !
  18. 'Kenny Dorham and the Jazz Prophets' (UK HMV 10") Booker Little 'Out Front' (Candid DG mono) John Coltrane 'Giant Steps' (UK London)
  19. That was some of the earliest Lee Morgan I ever heard. On the 70s blue label LP 'Lee Morgan Memorial Album' (a fabulous introduction to his Blue Notes, in itself). 'The Cooker' retains its freshness, to this day..
  20. More bad news. A class player - liked his work on the Teddy Charles Tentet albums in particular. Also that one with Gil Melle. RIP.
  21. Another two that seem to be everywhere (over here that is) are Jeff Lynne's 'War Of The Worlds' 2LP set and Stevie Wonder's 'Songs In The Key Of Life'.
  22. Another really good one in this style is the German Vogue issue in the 'Jazz Joint' series. That has Boland/Woode/Clarke with strings (plus a couple of trombones) playing mainly Boland compositions in a romantic style. Recorded in Brussells and not the usual Koln location. Damn nice ! Probably my favourite Boland album, without KCFBBB.
  23. Also saw Walter on one other occasion in a Cannonball Adderley tribute at the Playboy Fest in LA. If my memory is right this one had Roy McCurdy and George Duke completing the rhythm team. Nat Adderley was scheduled to play but was sadly wheelchair bound after illness (he very graciously came on stage for the duration of the performance though). yes, i remember that concert well. nat, however, was never expected to play as he was far too ill at that time. Indeed. I count myself as really lucky just to clatch a glimpse of him as he waved out at the audience. I had binocs on me from back in the bleachers and it was good to see him groovin' along to the music (which was great on that 30 minute set). It was real sad regarding his medical problems at the time.
  24. I went for a 42" Panasonic Viera plasma and am pretty happy with it.
