  1. Just reading larry's book at the present time myself. Will have to check out that bit.
  2. Yep, that's exactly how I recall it. They came and went in an instant - and some of those titles in the later (US-only) issues were just 'fiction' to me for many years. I only got chance to pick some of them up (e.g. 'Mother Ship') as people started off-loading vinyl to 2nd-hand stores when the Conn CD issues came out. Similarly Stanley T's 'Aint No Way'. Those Mobley's ('Third Season', 'Slice Of The Top', 'Thinking Of Home') remain a particular favourite. Same deal with the earlier 'brown sleeve' twofers. The only BN LP I had actually seen up to about '75 was a Donald Byrd 'Places and Spaces' and a couple of blue-label Liberty cutouts. Then in about 1976 I see a specialist shop window display with UA publicity blurb and folded-open copies of those US import twofers with Jazz Crusaders/Wes Montgomery/Gil Evans/JL Ponty/Booker Ervin/Andrew Hill etc. I thought I'd gone to heaven..
  3. Have a great birthday !
  4. So it was you who bought them all Brownie ! Ah, the legendary Mole Jazz 'Japanese Import' rack. Spent many an afternoon salivating over that lot but I was just a poor student then and could only afford cutouts ! The UK issued Rainbows look just like the US ones but with lighter-grade covers. I suspect it might have been Transatlantic who issued those (they also did a couple of 'non-Rainbow' batches from 1977 onwards - I have a Don Cherry 'Where Is Brooklyn' from this issue and quite a few others).
  5. The Kings were also in very limited quantities I believe, which accounts for their high price today. This thread also reminds me that the first batch or two of the 'Rainbows' came out also in UK pressings and were widely available. The later batches (by which time I think Michael Cuscuna must have been getting them issued in the States by near-subterfuge thanks to the bean-counters) were only available here as US imports and copies of 'Mother Ship', 'Medina' etc. were for many years frustratingly rare.
  6. Funny how things change but back in the late 70s I thought those Rainbow covers were the coolest thing ever (apart from Ike Quebec's 'Congo Lament' with it's yetti in earmuffs though. )
  7. I'll second that. The 'Rainbow' LPs are OK but they can seem a bit one-dimensional. The Kings, on the other hand, sound superb and with very low noise. I have the 'Sonic Boom' on the King and the Rainbow and prefer the King by a long way.
  8. Wayne Shorter 'Speak No Evil' (BN NY USA mono)
  9. miles davis vol 1 (lexington both sides, nm) Archival backup for my 10" copy.
  10. Miles Davis Vol 1 (BN 47W63rd DG mono)
  11. talk about musical integrity. none greater than the shortman. what's he into these days? The quartet with Perez/Pattitucci/Blade - this must be about the 5th time I've seen them. I was lucky enough to get a 2nd row stalls seat right behind Brian Blade. Someone cancelled so it was a late return. Talk about luck ! Parts of the concert were broadcast by BBC radio 3 last night (see their website) and the whole thing will apparently be broadcast in the near future in the Friday-night slot. It was a wonderful concert so check it out when it comes up for airing. Fantastic version of 'Prometheus Unbound' late in the show with Shorter going for broke on soprano. First half of the concert was by the splendid (and also age-less) Stan Tracey with his trio.
  12. talk about musical integrity. none greater than the shortman. what's he into these days? the krog-that's 94 proof stuff, got some of her surman stuff? Yep, this compilation on Crippled Dick has one track with Surman. 'New Spring' from 'Cloud Line Blue' (1978). A standout.
  13. Well, I'm having an urn of coffee and listening to a Karin Krog vinyl compilation. Pretty nice. Still recuperating from having to attend a great Wayne Shorter gig whilst full of a head cold. What a night !
  14. Wish I could make it. If you ever bring this one over the pond David, I'm first in the queue.

    Albert Ayler

There's a showing of the Ayler documentary at the Purcell Room in London on Saturday (11th). Preceded by a discussion with Henry Grimes, who is over here doing gigs this weekend !
  16. I've heard very good things about Brian Priestley's recent book - although have yet to read it myself. Written very much from the musical perspective. Priestley Book
  17. Thanks for the prompt on that one Brownie. I have a bit of credit with PJC so might well go for a copy of this beauty !
  18. More Stanley Turrentine. That 'Another Story' session is fantastic !
  19. And latest news is that the Russians are taking a hard line.. Borat In Russia
  20. Wonder what caused that horse to fall backwards?
  21. Still a day to go but I've sneaked a ticket for Wayne Shorter at the London Jazz Fest. Looking forward to it, as ever for concerts by Wayne.
  22. I was wondering if the college frat boys had been deliberately faked but maybe not. Put it down I guess to brain addling with that cac brew they were putting back. Lots of funny things in the film but I thought the story-line (such as it was) was a bit weak. Came across as a bit of a 'budget' production at times too but I guess that is part of the appeal. I still find the word (insert pauses here) 'not' coming into my head all the time 48 hours later.
