How is the Storyville Live Tatum series?

What was the Jazz Workshop series? Is there a connection between the different volumes?

Sad to hear. I just happened to spin a few of his SteepleChase releases recently -- some nice listening there...

It doesn't look like Verve ever did a two-CD version of the 2 LP Monk tribute. Another excuse to hook up a turntable.

This is a phenomenal record. Larry Stabbins was a major revelation for me (influences of Steve Lacy and Evan Parker are there, but overall a original and powerful voice). Tippett and Moholo are in top form and really gel well with each other, and the music is very diverse (from some subtle melodic playing to really intense blowing). Emanem released a solo saxophone disc, Monadic from Larry Stabbins last year. I liked it a lot. (I wrote a capsule review of the disk, which you can read here.)

Is this one available anyone in the States?

I remember when it happened to me with John Coltrane. It was with my second or third listening of the double LP, "The Other Village Vanguard Tapes." (Impulse! 9325)

Hey, I appreciate all the nice comments. Some not-so-fun things are happening with family stuff in my non-Internet life, so this isn't the most fun birthday I've had, but I'll survive. (Nothing life threatening.) I've been trying to keep Jazzmatazz maintained and haven't had enough extra time to keep up with the site regularly, but hope to have more time to do so in the future. And, hey, after not getting out all Fall, I managed to see a couple concerts this month!

Although electric will never shave as close as an acoustic blade, I'm thinking of giving a new SACD razor a try.
