  1. A terrific dinner tonight with my significant other before the symphony. Nice bottle of Spanish red accompanying a beet salad with seasoned goat cheese; we both had scallops, nicely pan-fried with mashed yams and kale. Yum. Symphony sucked, but the food, we remember. Oysters three ways with Cava for New Year's, rest of the menu as of yet undetermined!
  2. Damn. What is there to say? RIP.
  3. No music (yet), although I know something is on its way from Mosaic courtesy of my parents, who had to make an unexpected trip to New England last week. Significant other and I got each other good, technical snowshoes, which we're going to use next weekend! Lots of stocking stuffers, chocolate, books...a very good year!
  4. I do, Jim--in fact, that's exactly what I had in mind--it's on the brain, as I just watched "A Shot in the Dark" last night (the theme is the song used for that, uhm, "interesting" Canadian "where's the scarf" stage show that was posted up here a while back) and the samples on the Tolliver record contain some very Mancini-esque voicings. Or maybe I'm just hearing things... Surely you remember all those Black Panther cartoons...
  5. Wow--those samples sound terrific! Sort of an Oliver Nelson/Henry Mancini hybrid that I completely dig. I can't wait to pick this one up!
  6. Hey, isn't that JLarsen's squirrel at the corner pub? it's all about the after party!
  7. Thanks for all the information, everyone--JimR, I have _no_ idea how I missed that stuff on Google. Probably misspelled "Peter", or something. Jim S, thanks for the credits list--he's been on stuff that's all over the board! Everything But the Girl and, my favorite, The Buzzcocks' "Inventory"!
  8. Damn, Tony--I would have bought it! What fun to have a TVR over here! Why did you sell?
  9. My significant other is a keeper because she does things like call me and say, "so I was walking around doing some Christmas shopping and saw a record store and thought, 'I want to buy some records!' so I did and one is this really obscure-looking jazz one which I got because they play the song 'Gingerbread Boy' (my reaction at this moment: ) and it would be fun to listen to that and make gingerbread cookies. How much is too much to pay for a random record you know nothing about?" I laughed and said, unless it's Mantovani or Lawrence Welk, you're all good. She gets home, and we look through the stash. Original vinyl pressings of Johnny Cash "I Walk the Line" and "Orange Blossom Special", John Prine's first record, and a record by the above-referenced artist, Peter King, called "90% of One Percent", recorded live at Oxford University, on the Spotlite label. Well, I put that record on and the thing SMOKED. The rendition of Gingerbread Boy was terrific. Great energy throughout the recording. But I can't find anything about this guy on allmusic.com, the intenet, anywhere. Does anyone know anything about him? Was this record a one-shot deal, or is he someone worth looking further into? Thanks for any leads.
  10. Terrible, terrible news. Rest in peace.
  11. Use Google. For example, typing in "dark star" organissimo.org/forum will return results for that specific topic.
  12. Got a preorder notice for Cow Palace 12/31/76-1/1/77. Anyone picking this up? It looks good, and is my favorite incarnations of the band. The bonus disc looks tasty as well. Cow Palace Preorder
  13. Another vote for the Jazz Crusaders set. As Lon said, it's just fun stuff.
  14. Just got back to Seattle from Philadelphia where I spent a relaxing four days catching up with friends from the old 'hood. Man, I miss that city. The rest of the weekend holds catching up on work, seeing some friends, and figuring out where I want to live....
  15. Do it, damnit--you, Kevin, whomever. Life is too goddamn short. DO IT!!!
  16. You, Larry, and many other people are saying this--"he's not a stand up comedian, he didn't know how to deal..." But I saw him doing standup in LA in 1991, and have a lot of LA friends who have seem him at the Improv and other places in the years since, and when I, and they, saw him, he was completely brilliant. He's been at this game a long time. I don't know why he snapped, and I'm certainly not trying to excuse it, but I think it needs to be said that he was no novice at this game. Doesn't excuse a damn thing of that nasty shit he spewed, but, fwiw....
  17. Thanksgiving in Philadelphia with friends. Can't wait. 12 lb turkey (free range) Stuffing (my recipe--sage, bread, sausage, yum) Mashed sweet potatoes with pecans and brown sugar Pumpkin curry soup Some kind of cranberry relish (not my thing) Pecan Pie Pumpkin Pie Loads of whipped cream Even more loads of red wine Damn, I love this holiday. No marathon to run on Sunday like in years past, but it'll be a good one. Happy thanksgiving, all!
  18. An amazing record. Perfect in every sense of the word. VERY eye opening when I got it (a year ago, I'm chagrined to admit), and it's been in heavy rotation since.
  19. Weird. I cannot access it at all. I'll check with our IT people. Thanks.
  20. Any plans for more Christmas cuts for 2006, fellas?
  21. Is it just me, or is the damn thing down 75 percent of the time I try to check it? Anyone know what's up, or who has an inside connection and can get them to get a better server or something? For impulse purchasers like me ( ) they're probably leaving a lot of sales on the table...
  22. Wasn't this reissued on CD recently?
  23. A nice (couple of) glass(es) of Domaine des Terrisses, 2000... Gotta uncellar this shit from time to time!
