Thad Jones/ Mel Lewis Orch. - All My Yesterdays
Kevin Bresnahan replied to GA Russell's topic in New Releases
Don't be surprised if you find that old Grant CD-R and it won't play anymore. My original copy died a long time ago. Luckily, I had it backed up. -
I forgot about this thread... 13 years ago! No wonder I forgot about it, However, I think I remember that Guy ended up being unable to place a nice headstone on Larry Young's grave. I believe that his family denied it due his Muslim faith not allowing things like this.

He also produced several hit albums for the group America.

Eric Kloss - "Sky Shadows"/"In the Land of Giants"

We had that "fund raiser" for Eric Kloss here a few years back... I wonder how he's doing these days? Did anyone ever hear anything after we sent him that money? -

Can I ask why you are upping this? The single show you linked us to has passed. Is this a tour that will continue? I was hoping to see it in Boston. Also, poking around Pharoah Sander's website is disappointing. His "Tour" link lists shows from 2013. -

Cecil Payne - Brookfiled Andante (Spotlite). OK audio for a so-so live date. Lower your expectations and everything's fine. Cecil is in good form. The record sleeve came completely unglued and had to be taped. The guy at the record store said he doesn't tape record covers because "some people complain that I should leave them original". I said, "Oh, so letting the record fall out onto the ground is more original'. -

Frank Wess - Frank Wess Quartet (Prestige/Moodsville 8). A new purchase I found in a "New arrivals" bin at a local store for $8.00. AN original RVG pressing too. -
They compressed it? Really? Why did they feel the need to compress this to audible levels? Sure, add some compression to bring the bassist out of the murk but don't go so far that it's too loud. That's just dumb and very unfortunate. Did they "flat top" any of it? That would be even dumber.

Apologies to those who live in the area, but I know two people who have recently traveled to Detroit and both said that the homeless in the streets and the crime in their downtown area made them afraid to leave their cars, even in daylight. That said, if you want to be able to buy a beat up house for under $20K, Detroit is your place.

It blows my mind to realize that Jeb Patton is now over 40. I remember seeing him as "a kid" playing with Jimmy Heath back in the 90's. How time flies. -
From one of my posts in the Larry Young thread in the New Releases forum: http://www.themasterdiskrecord.com/2014/06/deciding-long-make-side-vinyl-record/ Summary of cutting length trade offs from this article: Here are your guide lines: Under 18 minutes, I could cut almost anything. As loud as wanted up to the groove distorting. Full bass, metal, rock—it’s all good. Between 18-22 minutes, I’m going to depend on a ballad or acoustic song to help with the length. If not, I’ll have to lower the level 2 or 3 db at 22 mins compared to 18 min. From 22-26 minutes, I might have to lower the level more, or roll off a little bass. This depends on the client’s preference for bass/full/warm sounds vs level. Over 25 minutes, it’s very likely—even for jazz—that I’ll have to lower the level, maybe clean up the low bass, and maybe more. I can cut 30 minutes on a side, but the level is down 8db or more from the level I can cut on a 18 minute side. That's a lot. But, the sound is still good (or can be) even though the record noise becomes more apparent since the music is quieter. If pressed at a high-quality plant with careful consideration, a long side can sound really good.

He's from your neck of the woods. From memory, I think he played for tv studios in LA for many years. I had one of his trio cds, on Four Star Records iirc,..capable playing, left me underwhelmed. Just my $.02. Smith plays on two of the dates in Mosaic's Bee Hive box; Brignola's "Baritone Madness" and Salvador's "Star Fingers".

I've yet to find a universal remote that fully duplicates a smart TV's myriad functions. If you're going to use any of the smart TV apps, you might be stuck with the TV remote anyway.

Almost all will exceed 26 minutes if my calculations were correct.

My Dad had a few "Sing Along With Mitch Miller" LPs in the stacks. I did keep a couple of Simon & Garfunkel LPs, although I later replaced them with clean copies. The rest was so scratched, they were basically unlistenable. -

My parents offered me their record collection a few years ago. Most were scratched to heck and I didn't even want to hear them. -
Given how much music they're going to have to have to stuff onto an LP side to get it all to fit, I would think that this is not one to opt for the vinyl edition. They'll have to roll off the bass to get ~26 minutes to fit on an LP side. See: http://www.themasterdiskrecord.com/2014/06/deciding-long-make-side-vinyl-record/

I don't think Bobby is playing any more.

Not so hard to understand when you realize what most people were using to play them back in the 50's & 60's. I still remember stacking several LPs for playback at my parents' parties. By the time the 4th or 5th LP fell, the playback started back slow as the record slid a bit on the stack below it. We really abused LPs back in the day. -

Xanadu Master Edition Series - Elemental Music
Kevin Bresnahan replied to dougcrates's topic in Re-issues
Why didn't they combine "True Blue" and "Silver Blue" onto 1 CD? It would've been less than 79 minutes (78:30 by my calculation) and as we have been noting in another thread, there are 81+ minute CDs being issued these days. -

For some reason, I thought it looked like an Atlantic cover but I searched all over and couldn't find it.
