  1. tatifan, you DO get a beautiul front cover image with the download to iTunes. . . though you don't get any more notes etc. than you see before downloading. I would rather pay less, but I have bought some of these because basically they were clones of Japanese cds that cost a lot more, and I felt they were a good deal in that sense. And I bought some Betty Carters because I hadn't been able to find cheaper used discs. . . .
  2. Well, I really like Cannon from the Savoy sides through the Fantasy sides, and I just revel in the excitement and joy that comes from listening to his playing. Got these two new ones in the mail tonight and know i'm going to really enjoy them when I have time to spin them a few times (likely this weekend). I've also been enjoying a couple of live shows from 1972 lately that are great. Those solos! I've never been unhappy with Nat's work. I like it a bit better earlier than later, though some of those long low notes on the late sessions are quite fun to hear!
  3. Dan, I haven't run across one of the downloads yet that are from vinyl; all I've heard are from Japanese Verve POCJ cds. . . and sound fantastic. And from out of print US cds.
  4. When it WAS on the Sony site, it was selling for like 47 dollars. . . on sale . . . I don't think the cdu price is really "incorrect."
  5. Dang! Still haven't gotten mine! But good things are worth waiting for!
  6. Yes, his work with Garcia really is laudable. I admit it's hard to listen to his work outside of Garcia. . . .
  7. You are very right about this release; the sound is excellent and Jerry and John are really having fun, and I like Keith in the JGB, he knows how to sort of just do his thing and loosely compliment everyone. This is one of the very best Jerry Garcia Band releases I have ever heard.
  8. Smoooooth moov! Great discs!
  9. Maybe my copies of these two Cannons and the new Jerry Garcia will be waiting for me at home! (I used that hope to get me through a whole day of awfully-presented database training!)
  10. Well, I didn't mean the "more of the same" as derogatorily as it may seem I did (though I'm less excited about the new Hartman/Coltrane material as I really have never been crazy about that session). More of the same, at this caliber overall, is great news! I'd LOVE to hear this stuff, all of it, but I'm not allowing myself to begin foaming at the mouth for it. . . because I think it will take a long time to appear. I hope I'm wrong! I'll get excited as soon as I see release dates!
  11. Hmmm. . .what I have heard does not sound that bad. . . Raoul, this material is not officially commercially available and has only been circulated among collectors for the most part (though some of it seems to be from vinyl sources (?). . . . To follow rules of the board, one would have to use Private Messaging or email to work out obtaining copies.
  12. There is in circulation among collectors about two and a half hours of quartet recordings from Denmark, 1968 with Kenny Drew and Tootie Heath in the quartet. There's also a German broadcast tape going around of about thirty mintutes duration of a quintet with Johnny Griffin. I think that's all I know of.
  13. I've no real complaints about Phil, especially compared to some here. I was thinking more along the lines of the likely custodian of these tapes, Michael Cuscuna.
  14. My own enthusiasm is a bit dampened by the fact that I sincerely believe we'll have to wait quite some time for this material to become cds ready to distribute. And I have a nagging bit of fear that if this lands in the hands of a particular reissue producer he'd deem about one third or more "unfit for release" and I'd be one frustrated dude. So. . . I'm holding back my excitement. The music itself is not earthshatteringly different--it's going to be great to hear and study, but it's in some sense "more of the same" for the most part. . . . I'm most excited I think aobut the ALS material.
  15. So many great tenors passed through that band. (Let's not forget Gonsalves!) Still. . .for me . . . it's Pres.
  16. I'm all for more Impulse RVG work, as well as more Monk and live and disc-recorded remastering. And I'm welcoming his take on the Prestige etc. titles.
  17. I'm pretty much in agreement with Robert re: the sound. Also worth noting is that the Blue Note RVGs of the last few years do not sound the same as the early JRVGs and US RVGs.
  18. "Ornettethology." DUH!
  19. Not to mention that new Convention Center Chuck wants to develop in his hometown. . . .
  20. I might buy a more expanded version, that is rumored to be available near Xmas.
  21. Me, I love Rouse.
  22. This is the main thread. . . . I know of quite a bit of off board emailing about this stuff, but yeah, it's sort of "numbingly" amazing.
  23. I don't really feel that way. . . I think you can make an ipod sound pretty good, but you can get a lot more tube for 525!
  24. Very pretty covers!
