  1. You're kidding right? He was not charged with looking after us on the BN board, we were just a temporary diversion he allowed himself. I am not sure that he wasn't a senior VP at that time with BN.
  2. I chose the electric bill. Electricity is needed to spin all your other cds. Without electricity. . . . We don't want to go there.
  3. There is a certain sameness to the set, I have to admit. But it is a treasure trove! I usually only listen to a half a disc or a disc at a time. . .but that is the way it is with me with any artist. And the Hodges, and the Webster, and the Brown, and the. . . well everyone on her kicks butt and plays the blues and gets that Hodges groove and sound out there!

    Helen Merrill

Today I received "Sings Irving Berlin" from an ebay purchase. Not essential, but very relaxing and mellow. . . . Helen singing is clearly the intent; on this cd release no accompanists are even listed. Sound surprised me; this is a very early cd but rich, relaxed and not at all strident sound.
  5. Of those I would say target the Candoli, the Costa and/or the Harper.
  6. I have a lot of these, and really like them. The Oscar Moore, the Eddie Costa and the Pepper Adams probably get the most play. . . .

    Bix on Sunbeam

Details for this material are here: http://www.originjazz.com/ Yes, all the Bix material in the Mosaic will be also in the Sunbeam/Bix Restored volumes; these 12 cds have it ALL. The sound is EXCELLENT. The notes are good to very good. This is the way I went with the material after other methods were started. . . . I treasure all four of my three cd volumes.
  8. Here is the website for the Bix Restored cds: http://www.originjazz.com/
  9. Or there are four three cd sets on the Bix Restored label that reissue all his work chronologically. . . the first set may be the best (the second may be the best too) and would make a nice purchase: best sound available in my opinion for this material and good notes too. . . . In this manner you can slowly get the sets sequentially if you really are digging Bix (I have a feeling you will.)
  10. I have a lot of King Jazz cds. . . they're very good content wise, but they are very early digital and suffer a bit from edgy sound. . . . Really I don't think this new label has any valid connection to the Mezzrow label, but I could be wrong. These have not been produced for many moons, and are very hard to find these days. In most cases the material is now out in better sounding editions though I still have been keeping the King Jazz cds in cases where I have the others; I feel sentimental to them as they helped me to discover some great music!
  11. They look like the Verve by Request, the new Impulse are the same way.
  12. The Japanese cds are COOL. Nice sound!
  13. The early ones that came out here in lp facimile are also frankly inferior to any of the other lp facmile reproductions I've seen. Nothing beats those Impulse gatefolds from Japan. . . these Verves aren't even CLOSE.
  14. Personally, I'm an American and I LOVE lp facimiles! THEIRS however weren't the best on the block. As for Mr. Clarinet it looks to me as if it came out first as a 10" on Norgran (maybe just the first session?) as "Buddy DeFranco Quartet" and then was reissued several times as an lp under the title "Mr. Clarinet". I can't yet locate a picture of the original "Quartet" cover, which I bet would be a D. S. Martin drawing. . . . Interesting page I found that talks of the biography out: http://www.parksidepublications.com/buddydefranco_ltr.pdf
  15. It doesn't seem that strange to me. It's a beurocracy, they have established a line that is in all their sales literature, buyers know it by that name, and they're reluctant to change a horse in mid-stream. The packaging still often resembles an lp with the original cover on the front, and the inside insert/booklet looking like the back cover of the lp etc. That's all they need to keep hanging on to the name. . . or at least that would be how I would guess they think about it.
  16. The last batch of these in the US were issued as "digipaks"--jewelcases, cardboard outer, plastic glued in insert for the disc, booklet in a pocket within the case. They can still be called "LP Reproductions" because nothing new is added, no new liners, no additional material not on the original lp release. . . .
  17. Thanks Clinton! Wish I could visit Addis again!
  18. That's good advice. The Flair disc IS a wonderful single disc compilation. Some of my favorite blues this Modern/Bihari Brothers material, though I really do enjoy the VeeJay material, and the latest reissues of the VeeJay stuff on Collectables sounds really good--I have two from the Collectables series, and all the others on an earlier late eighties cd series that sounds fine as well. John Lee (along with T-Bone Walker and B. B. King) I find truly inspiring!

    Barney Wilen

    Two stars? Whada they know!
  20. I've been living with electric Miles material since almost the original releases, and I've learned to really love it, and I have a fondness for this group with and without Jarrett and Moreira. I haven't spun this one for a while. . . . It didn't floor me when it was first released, and I still have favorites both released and unreleased that I prefer, but it's a powerful powerful performance indeed. My favorite bits from this band are performances of "The Mask." That piece just always gets me with its bass line and the ebbing and flowing texture! "Miles at Fillmore" has the classic version. . . . I still have hopes that one day we'll get the complete unedited performances from that week.
  21. I've always wondered about that Monk date. Seems to me more as if Trane was being reminded it was HIS turn at bat. . . .

    Sir Roland Hanna

One of the things I most like about Sir Roland is that like Jaki Byard he can roll his fingers through the entire jazz piano tradition with authority!
  23. I really myself don't think there's a Getz influence. There's a Pres influence, a deep study of Pres and Bird, and there's a lot of Eddie himself.

    Sir Roland Hanna

I'm definitely a fan, as you know Jim. I've enjoyed all that I have and I'm on the lookout for more. . . .
  25. I notice that half.com has a number of reasonably (ten dollars) priced copies of the live Tabla Beat Science cds so I snagged me one! Thanks for the recommendation.
