Herbie Hancock "Empyrean Isles" Blue Note Japan 85th Annniversary SHM-SACD
-
A late start today. On another board they are discussing this title and I decided to pop a copy of the SHM-SACD in. Not my favorite Larry Young recording perhaps, but what a band--Woody Shaw, Joe Henderson and Elvin Jones joining Larry Young. Larry Young "Unity" Blue Note Japan 85th Anniversary SHM-SACD

I lost space moving into this expanded cottage with my wife ten years ago. . .I have a climate controlled storage space as well as perhaps enough space for a normal person here. I've been blessed with good hearing and eyesight (I'm 69 and still don't wear glasses, though all my family has since adolescence, parents and siblings). My hearing was recently checked and is quite good--wish my wife's was--I protected my ears during my drumming and motorcycling days. If things were different, things would be different.

It can all fit on one SACD, which has a larger capacity than a cd, it would not all fit on one cd.

Well there are various versions . . . a straight album, ones with a few additional tracks, and this one with even more material, released over time. I like to have and compare versions, it's something I've done for decades. In this case this best version was just released in the last two weeks in two formats. Comparing teaches me about systems and engineering, something I used to do and have done a few times since my band days for a few friends. I will probably thin the herd of some of these in time, I do that, I have sort of semi-annual purges when I have the time to go through the collection objectively. (Right now I have about 30 Japanese and 20 US cds that are duplicates I've culled from the shelves). In cases where I have SACD and cd titles, I tend to keep one of each, as in some cases the SACD is not a hybrid (as in this case) and I still play cds in one system and the car that are not SACD capable. I'm just both an audiophile and collector and they merge in many instances. Blue Note, Impulse and Bethlehem are three labels I tend to be a completist of and keep duplicates often.

Kenny Burrell with Art Blakey “On View At the Five Spot.Cafe” Blue Note Japan SHM-SACD I have about five versions of this on cd and SACD and this one is THE one to listen to. And has additional material. I have listned to the new UHQCD set and it sounds really good too, but this one just has that edge goosing it into the “best” category that SACD always seems to have in my system. Worth the wait for sure!

That's cool. I don't do files or stream. Some day if I am feeling really confident and adventurous I may try the downloading and burning to cdr. . . but that won't be soon.

Great! This cd was cheap compared to what I see of her others. . . and I'm not sure there are downloads. If there are that's a good way to go.

A cool still morning. Going to be a beautiful day! Starting off with Lauren Henderson “Sombras” Brontosaurus Music cd This is the first I’ve heard Ms Henderson, bought because Joel Ross is part of the supporting quartet. Wow, what a graceful phrasing and voice that draws one in. Such a pity her other albums are so expensive to collect! And now Donna Fuller (with Pete Rugolo and his Orchestra) “My Foolish Heart” Liberty TOCJ Japan Super Bit Jazz Classic lp facsimile cd From 1957. Nice sounding disc!

I hear it differently but that's cool. We all get excited over things others don't and vice versa. What I like about these recordings is that they are exploring a new direction without diluting the jazz tradition with so many other influences. That's a fresh approach to my ears. I don't dig "jazz" with so much rock and world etc. influences.
-
Personally I really like it. I like this new direction towards a more "intellectual" jazz--that's how I hear it and similar recordings with these musicians.
