  1. I agree, that's a masterful performance, so very Slim and yet seriously great.
  2. That was my guess. Can't wait.
  3. Link was just to an image of the cover, which I can't seem to get to work. More news to follow, right now the information seems only to be on Facebook. I knew Ricky Ricardi was working on a Slim project but did not know what it is til today. https://www.facebook.com/zev.feldman?pnref=story The disc is available for preorder on amazon.com
  4. An upcoming release featuring a collection of singles from Slim Gaillard! Sally forth for this one. Notes are from Ricky Ricardi, and I'm looking forward to those and to the newly-reissued music! SLIM GAILLARD: SEARCHING FOR YOU: THE LOST SINGLES OF MCVOUTY (1958-1974). Coming November 25th on Sunset Blvd Records (Redeye Distribution). Pre-order now. Sometimes I go knocking on the doors of my heroes. Usually its a family member or friend who helps open that door. This was the case in January of 2014 when my longtime friend, producer/journalist, Kevin Goins connected me with Jan Gaye the daughter of Slim Gaillard. Slim was a one-of-a-kind. He played guitar, piano (sometimes with palms up), sang and even had his own funny language called 'Vout'. His music has brought me a lot of joy since my early 20's. Slim's music is happy and represents the good things in this life. As I write in my liner notes, "Slim's music should be prescribed by doctors to individuals who are depressed." With the support of Slim's family I'm happy to announce the first newly-heard music of Slim Gaillard in decades, a pill we can all swallow! This new collection is culled from lost 45 records that were collected from online auctions by my co-producer, Tom Samuels. Very little is known about these tracks, recorded for such obscure labels as SGM Music, Sky Strip & Xavier Records. My guess is these were self-produced singles Slim was cutting, sending out to A&R agents looking for a 'deal' or to radio stations for a hit. Thanks to Michael Graves at Osiris Mastering Studios in Atlanta we were able to restore a great deal of the sound, gingerly, cleaning up the audio as best as possible without removing the high-ends. This deluxe 4-panel, digi-package contains a 32-page booklet with rare photographs plus essays by yours truly, author and historian Ricky Riccardi, Gaillard archivist and co-producer Tom Samuels, saxophonist/composer and friend of Slim, John Altman, and lastly Slim's son and daughter, Mark Gaillard and Jan Gaye. Cover photo by Burt Goldblatt. Art direction & design by the talented Burton Yount. Package editor: Richard Seidel, Project assistance: Skip Heller. I hope you'll enjoy. Many thanks to Len Fico and the estate of Slim Gaillard for making this project possible. And thanks to all of you for all your support.

I think Dylan is an amazing artist. . . I came to really appreciate him later in my life, but I really appreciate his work. He now has a Nobel, an Oscar, a Grammy or more than one, and a Presidential Medal of Honor. He needs a Tony!
  6. Les: yes, in this very thread the idea of this reissue was discussed and the reissue discussed. Go back to posts from 2012.
  7. udiscovermusic.com has better pricing, for the US at least.
  8. I believe he was referring to the original mix having bass and piano centered, which is enhanced further by a mono fold down.
  9. I responded today Joel when I saw the news for the first time. I hope it all went well, seems it did. Hoping this gets posted by C.J. somewhere I can read it, looking forward to it. I have never listened to a single podcast in my life unfortunately..
  10. Sorry you feel left out Joel. I've never listened to a podcast, and haven't been reading any blogs this century, so I haven't heard this one. Hope it was a great experience for you both. C.J. is a passionate critic and interviewer, I bet it was. When I have time today I'll see if I can find the blog entry. Edit to add: Seems nothing has been released yet from the interview? Will look forward to reading it.
  11. I love his sound through the years. I'm a fan. He's up in the middle of my top ten.
  12. Yes, I watched that too and noticed the Holiday track. I like Abigail Spencer. I'll probably watch this for a while, it wasn't great but it wasn't a total waste of time. (Like half of what I watch!)
  13. Okay, more info. Graham quote in this article: http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/concerts-that-changed-rock-jimi-hendrix-and-the-band-of-gypsies-at-the-fillmore-east-new-york-19870604 "But even at the Fillmore East with the Band of Gypsys he sometimes found old habits hard to break. Graham says that Hendrix's first set on the second night was in fact a disappointing reversion to his showbiz stunts. When Hendrix asked him during intermission what he thought of the set, Graham was brutally frank."I said, 'You're Jimi Hendrix, and anything you do is taken as gospel because of who you are,'" says Graham. "'In the first show, you humped the guitar, you played it with your teeth, you stuck it behind your back. You just forgot to play.'" Stunned, Hendrix went back out onstage for the second show and played. The incandescent version of "Machine Gun" on the 1970 live LP Band of Gypsys was recorded during that show. What doesn't make sense here is the order of shows he is talking about. He got confused with sequence. The way this would be true is if he were referring to the second show of the first night being flamboyant and then him taking him to task and Jimi returning the next night to a stand-still serious performance, as it is the first show of the second night that the "Machine Gun" mentioned was performed.
  14. I've heard that story, but I'm not sure that it had anything to do with this show. It seems this show he was dead serious from the git go, it's all great performances with better singing than usual and some killer guitar, a lot of the material was pretty new, this is a phenomenal show. It's possible that on the second night he did a more flamboyant first show and then a more focused second show. . . it's been a long time since I revisited the boots of these. These shows did have more of the familiar repertoire that I think would lead to the stage antics. I have mainly listened to the official two cd set the last five years or so. . . which is not all stellar (well non-stellar Jimi is still fantastic). I'll look to see what I can find out about Graham's statement. Edit to add: Researching on two forums it seems that "experts" think that either Bill Graham imagined this story or misremembered the actual show, applying it to these nights and not an earlier Fillmore appearance. No first set is sloppy and unfocused here. The second set of the first night may be the loosest. . . and Bill's story doesn't really apply to a second set.
  15. I think it's the best of the four Fillmore shows that New Year's holiday time. Really well mixed and mastered.
  16. It is not legitimate. And no, it's not available legitimately.

I ordered it today too. Wow! Amazon uk price is killer.
  19. Really enjoying Flash Season 2 on Blu-ray. When broadcast here the picture is not great. I always enjoy CW shows on disc more. Zoom is a lot more bad-ass tun I noticed watching this before, and the soundtrack and effect sounds this year for Zoom is really "cool."
  20. Love "In the Mood for Love." Need to see "The Grandmaster."
  21. I have seen that listed as well. At one point I asked Michael Cuscuna if he would consider a box set of the Plaza recordings that night, I figured it would be an amazing opportunity to document all the artists on the Columbia roster that appeared, I figured there would have to be great photos and even some eyewitness accounts and more music than we got released on a few LPs. He just didn't seem to take to the idea or think it was something Columbia would want to do. It's a shame, might be a real treasure.
  22. Done!
  23. Well, I know how to love someone and be loved. Second marriage. . . didn't want to lose my first wife, but almost nine years later to be married again and loved and love this way, it's made my life so much more happy and peaceful. I'd wish this on anyone.
