Disc 3 is the "bonus disc" in the set. Here's the track list: It All Comes Back to You Watership Down Solar On Green Dolphin Street Days of Wine and Roses The first is an original by Onaje, and I'm not sure I'd consider "Watership Down" a standard, but the remaining three certainly are.

Have a great one and many more happy returns!

Just be a bit patient Jeff, he may well become more acclimated and begin to enjoy his new situation more. My girlfriend has just gone through the very same thing with her 86 year old mother, moved her from a decaying house in McAllen to an assisted living place here near her home. At fist her mom was truly despondent and disoriented; she too has big memory problems and had no immediate sense of what had happened. But over the course of the first week she perked up and is learning about her new place and seems happier. . . . Give it a little time, and try not to overstress about it all. It could get better.

Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't
jazzbo replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
So where have those Gibbs sessions shown up instead? The Museum of Broadcasting in New York has a Kinescope. And last year a copy was sold at Skinner auction for $652. Who knows if it ever shows up. Thanks for the info. I'd love to see it one day. Yes, Jazz Oracle did a great job. -
Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't
jazzbo replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Sure. But there's the distinct possibility there may be very little available to license or release. If I'm not mistaken it was a rare thing for a show to be on tape in this time period. -
Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't
jazzbo replied to JSngry's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Yes. Personally, I'm very found of the lp. I've seen just seconds of either a broadcast or rehearsal in a documentary. Whether there is much more. . . I cannot say, and would hope so. Only, I would also think it would have appeared. But then again, maybe not. I've seen a Bell Telephone hour show that was broadcast (and un-broadcast portions) from Canada that has never been officially released. So I guess there's hope. But that was from about six years later. . . taped performances and retained. Not necessarily the case six years earlier. -
Are there any box bargains currently available?

Sure, but I don't think we'll ever see a Mosaic of this material. It's all been out before etc. That said, I've been impressed with the JSP series. Nothing to brag about at all as far as packaging or notes, but the sound is very good. I've books and other sets for notes, and having all the official releases in sound this good . . . I'm happy. Recommended, and I'm no blanket fan of JSP. -

I'm with you. I have only ever seen about 30 seconds of the broadcast, or what may have been a broadcast. And I've never heard anyone with a copy or speaking of a copy. -
Interesting But WTF Department
jazzbo replied to Dave James's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
They've been doing this for some time in forensic and archaeological circles. It's a cool gig. No one comes forward and says "Hey that doesn't look like me/my grandmum/my five great grandfather David"! -
Mosaics That Could Have Been, But Weren't

What they could do is make a box set of the "A Drum is A Woman" Ellington material. They could release the two cd set version that Schaap apparently readied that was never released. And they could add two additional discs of jazz figures' recorded complaints about the Phil Schaap version. -

It's interesting to note that the Ellington title in the "Original Masters" release was a new or different mastering than US issues of the material. Sounded good. I've never heard the Fats Waller entry, being so happy with the US box set, and having all the JSP sets, and . . . well I've a lot of Thomas Waller. -
In the box set itself, those remixing credits are paired with the original recording engineer credits, and are listed in the credits for the individual lps/sessions. I think they may well represent re-mixing done for the original release, and not necessarily for the box set. But maybe. Interestingly in all but one instance I think the remix engineer and recording engineer are the same individual.

There's some discussion in this thread: Sound is quite good. I wouldn't say that the sound is markedly better than the Mosaic or Columbia cds, different than the Mosaic, maybe a bit better. I've been told that the albums here that were put out by Wounded Bird sound quite improved in this set compared to the Wounded Bird versions. There is one additional hour (on a separate disc) of previously unreleased live material in the set, from the same shows as "Stepping Stone." Ands very good performances.

I may have a higher threshold for the bad and the ugly. . . I say there's more good than other in these in my opinion. Sound restoration is very good. I'm glad I sprung for them, though I had some of these tracks elsewhere.

I love the sound of the US set popmarket is offering. That said, it may not be the cup of tea of someone else, I view mastering sound as a subjective thing. I find the sound clear but not thin and brittle. I have not heard the European set. I have heard the Ellington in the series, the sound is good, but bettered by the Mosaic sets. The booklet is excellent! As is the song selection and sequencing. -
Lester Young/Basie Set Selling Well
jazzbo replied to tranemonk's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
Ha! Well, if I could do it from Austin, I'd accept if they call. Not sure i could handle that though. Even though I have experience dealing with the messed up state government of this century, I don't want to work in that sort of a situation again if I can help it. Almost got a job at my local Harley dealer, but a the last minute they decided not to add more staff now. They're telling me to sit tight and wait, and I will but I think I'll also target book stores next. Gotta do something to get the laptop off my lap and some money in the bank for my high property taxes. -
There was jazz before Gershwin. . . . I think there were many nexuses in jazz over the decades, and thus it's reputation as "American music" is well-applied. I think that the mists of bullshit and chest-pounding claims will possibly always obscure and dirty its origins, but there are many groups that have had a deep influence on the music.

Adrian, I always have viewed you as a founding father.

My condolences Joel. Those sudden departures are so hard. Not that it's really any easier when you have time to prepare, to say goodbye, but that sudden loss hurts deeply, quickly. Think of all the great things you shared with him, and keep thinking about them. Hang in there Joel.

I used to post on Jazz Central Station. Someone really hated me there, I think because I got along with someone else that was hated. Taught me a lot about internet behavior.

Hope you had a great birthday Al! I remember that visit. . .and it's amazing how much my life has been influenced by this forum. A real community that has meant a lot to me over the years. Thanks all!
