  1. Many happy happy returns John!
  2. Didn't take your reply as snippy. I just didn't read your post thoroughly. Thanks Paul.
  3. Didn't mean to be snippy! The biggest worry I have with the public domain labels and what they release is that they often release material the majors haven't. . . and the sound isn't great. But the majors may think (and probably with good reason) why should we now make any effort to put this out, most of those who want it have either bought these releases or ripped it from a blog. And so those who may have the best possible sources and may have the best engineers and facilities continue to not release the material. And we don't get the stuff as we could, and maybe should. Which may all be nonsense, just something I imagine that is a way they look at it. I may be giving them way too much "credit," or they may have a totally different view and reason for not releasing this material. If I worked at Sony or Universal I'd pitch a sort of "bootleg series" such as has started with the Miles Davis estate, but with classic jazz. Seek out what I could find of these sort of airchecks of the swing, "New Orleans Revival," bebop, etc. material, secure the rights, remaster them as well as possible, put them out in nice packages with some nice notes. And then be laughed out of my job, most likely. . . .
  4. He's excellent at accompanying himself on the piano. Not everyone does that with the skill he does.
  5. I agree that a snail's pace or very slow groove is really magic, really hard to pull off. And I love those three singers!
  6. Yes, but I clearly said "could" and "if" knowing full well that this is not always the case, nor is likely to be.
  7. Merrill? Humes? Forrest? Ward? O'Connell? Reddy? I'm assuming it's one of the first two. It's Merrill. The only Helen (jazz singer) I hold that high in esteem. Other important Helens in my life: my late wife, and Helen Folesade Adu. I guessed Merrill... but I am wondering who Jackson is? I guess I should have said "Weldon Leo". . . that would have been clearer. I might be mistaken, but I don't think that there's anyone here that has any pull at Mosaic. Most of Betty's stuff is not that hard to find. . . I got on the boat late and got all I wanted easily and cheaply enough. I think if it weren't "top three" and were say "top ten" there'd be a lot more Abby and Ella and maybe (maybe) contemporary singers mentioned.
  8. The majors may be in a position to buy a few stray airchecks that have been put out on "boots," but I don't think they have anything on hand they haven't given us. . . . What they can/could give us when/if they care to is the best sounding stuff around as opposed to the public domain labels.
  9. Many many happy happy returns Mr. R!

  13. Thanks for the heads up.
  14. Chris, I really respect your opinions, but I don't think that Wynton's career was "made" by his Lincoln Center post, but long before. His talent got him opportunities early on as a sideman then as a leader, and his tailoring of his image got him recognition beyond the cognoscenti and he made the most of it. And to say that he plays without feeling? That doesn't hold up if you listen to his work. I happen to like his writing and respect his arranging as well. I don't like a lot of his views on jazz, but I also more and more seem to think there's quite a bit to the idea that something isn't really "jazz" if it has fused too many non-jazz, electric elements. Doesn't make it any less quality of music, but I can concede that calling "Aghartha" or Sonny Sharrock's "Seize the Rainbow" or a lot of the work of Frisell and Zorn as "jazz" is a stretch. Anyway, I just am a lot less bothered by Marsalis' and Crouch's spots in "Jazz" than you, and that's okay with me.

Mine is in the mail to me from Da Bastids. Looking forward to it!
  16. Yes, indeed. And many live dates. Sigh. So much good Pres.
  17. Looking forward to "Extensions." It's a great recording!
  18. For me it's because of Pres. I'm a huge Lester Young fan, more a Lester Young fan than a Count Basie Orchestra fan. I had (have) this material on other discs, but the mastering, source material and sound is all over the map and here it's all together in excellent presentation and sounding fantastic. So this is one big hunk of Pres I can grab and spin. If I have this and the Savoy two cd set and the Keynotes, Commodores and the Verve set. . . I'm ready to go to that island.
  19. That this sold so well and fast may not have anything to do with size, but maybe with the allure of Pres. I often think there's a market section that Mosaic has for the older styles of jazz that may exist outside the internet, that is there may be a sizable number of buyers that we never see on the boards, but get the catalogs and order. They may have been waiting for just such a set and hopped right on it. Anyway, I'm so glad that this set was a success. It's a well-deserved success.
  20. I'm not among the haters. So many hours of jazz on tv, a great thing. I enjoy the series.
  21. Good point.
  22. Yews, good news that mjazzee shared some time ago:
  23. Thanks for the precis Mike. I'm not aware of an earlier cd release of Payne's "Plays the Music of Charlie Parker" before the '97 Collectables release, but there may have been an earlier one. . . . Anyway, sounds as if the sound quality of this box set is at least "acceptable." Good news!
  24. A previous thread discussing similar sets from this company:
