Cool. I have some of this material (I think) on King jazz cds, but the upgrade in sound should be substantial (? not too familiar eith Eekhoff's work).

Wow - 9CDs ... ... Amazon.com states 20 September release. I pre-ordered all three sets from Worlds Records, and they just sent me a shipping notice.

Yes, I received my copy last week (mentioned above).
  5. I'm cool with that. I agree he's a giant. I've corralled everything I can of Woody's. Thanks again for the info shawoody.
  6. I don't think there have been official releases. I'd like to believe Jim about them. I just have heard the studio albums which with the exception of Native Dancer have been interesting for a bit but haven't hung with me well. The Weather Report material I like better, but it looks as if there's nothing new here, just stuff I already have and don't pull out that much. Not that exciting. I'd just hold back and hope that a new, improved Native Dancer is released one day. Maybe, maybe not, it's hard to say these days if that will ever happen.
  7. Okay, here we go again... Is this to be available ONLY in the US? And does this mean that it WILL NOT be shipped to anyone OUTSIDE the US? I understand Pop Market may have the exclusive right to sell it, but what is the total availability? And Shawoody, you still haven't explained your position in this. Have you a horse in this race, other than as a fan? (And BTW, new remastering ain't always better remastering, as we've all experienced. Not likely in this case, but y'know...) Ted, from what I read on the Hoffman board, Pop Market ships to Canada. If the mastering is new mastering by Mark Wilder, I personally would consider that a plus.
  8. Well, if it's new mastering, that's something different. This is the first of the sets released so far via Pop Market exclusively in the US that tempts me.
  9. I actually think that is a great story device. Hope it comes to fruition. Will be interesting to see what year this takes place in.
  10. Yes, sound is a bit better than on my copies via collector's circle. . . .
  11. THANKS for the Info shawoody.
  12. I would never say never. i would say though that I think a complete Weather Report is a big offering, and yet maybe not big enough for one of the "Classic Albums" box sets, so sort of in between in status and not a high priority. And Sony may well wonder about sales potential.
  13. If you're a member of the Hoffman forum with enough posts to participate in the Classifieds, this would probably sell there for more than your current price.
  14. I'm sure I have it all. . . and rarely listen to much of it.
  15. Ed, I have the dvd from the Complete Classic Albums box set, as well as the European unofficial DVD. The one from Sony looks and sounds better, substantially.
  16. Jerry Garcia had to similarly relearn a lot of guitar after a stroke and he doesn't sound radically different afterwards to me. Thelonious Monk's piano slowly but radically evolved in my opinion. I remember the not-often-enough-heard-from Jim R. writing that Joe Pass' style had changed radically. I really haven't been familiar enough with his entire work to say that is true, but I trust Jim.

Got the Christian and Gryce cds in the mail today from amazon. The Christian sounds pretty good, if a little bright; transfers to digital and mastering are by Bill Welham.
  19. There was no doubt that you were going to buy the Miles John, but I'm happy you're getting the Jimi.
  20. I think the RVGs have the best digital sound I've heard of this material. Get the Milt Jackson ones too. They're great.
  21. A lot of that sound is from PAT. Don't know what he's playing exactly, and it may be hollow semi-hollow? I see pictures with this guitar in several colors: EDITED TO ADD: Okay Hardbop, if it was the guitar pictured above, it was a Benedetto guitar. It's a Pat Martino signature model made by the Benedetto luthiers. http://benedettoguitars.com/2011/06/28/numero-uno-pat-martino/ http://benedettoguitars.com/guitars/professional-series/pat-martino-signature-model%e2%84%a2/ From the link above: The Pat Martino Signature Model took nearly a year of collaboration between Bob and Pat to develop the perfect instrument for Pat to use every single day on the road, in the studio, while conducting clinics, and while composing new music and revisiting the classics. A very light weight, chambered mahogany body, carved maple top, fast ebony fingerboard, and two A6 Benedetto pickups with duel volume and tone controls, make this instrument specific to Pat’s exacting needs: all without losing the Benedetto pedigree, uncompromising workmanship, and unmatched balance and tonal performance. Available with Pat’s signature inlaid on the fingerrest, Pat’s famously heavy-gauge strings, and in his favorite finishes – Black on Black or Autumnburst on Black. This model is available ONLY DIRECT FROM BENEDETTO GUITARS. Pricing is not discounted. Includes hardshell case and signed Certificate of Provenance by both Pat Martino and Bob Benedetto. (Photos on right by Mark Sheldon) A Quote from Pat Martino: “A fine guitar, from a great luthier is designed to remain neutral, and yet provide all that’s necessary for an ongoing relationship. Its visual beauty, a continuous reminder of how it originally hypnotized, and how it will always do the same. Its balance, unquestionable, its endurance outlasting, its adaptation, … like a fluid that takes the shape of what it’s creatively poured into. Bob Benedetto thank you, that’s what this instrument means to me”. $6500

  23. The released material is great. I bet the unreleased is excellent as well. As for the price. . . I think that it's not that bad for a Hip-O set. It may pay to watch and wait a bit to see if there's a cheaper source. I mean you can get two freshly-released pop cds for that price and get only 1 percent of the value.
  24. In the US, not all these five are in print as individual albums. At least one, to my knowledge has never been released individually in the US. I think Om hasn't been available as a separate US release since 1989. Not sure Selflessness ever has been a separate US cd. And Cosmic Music has only been available on cd from Japan, quite some time ago; copies are very expensive. Selflessness and Om were/are available on the Major Works of John Coltrane two cd set from 1992. Exprrssion is available on cd from 1993 and At the Village Vanguard Again from 1997. I don't think it's unusual to see new re-amsterings available after this amount of time and I hope/think we'll get them. 14 to 22 years is a long time in digital mastering technology.
  25. Yeah. The telling thing here it's on Hip-O. Which means it's going to cost more no matter what and probably two additonal things: Verve is doing less and less as regards "big" reissues on their own, and they don't think this volume (and probably any other that sneaks out) will sell in the numbers the other three have/would. They're probably right on the second point. IF these are new remasters from those that appeared in the US on cd in the past, they'll be worth it to me. If not, well, I'll get it anyway, I really liked the other three boxes. I'm a poster child for Coltrane, Davis, Monk and a few others' reissue programs.
