Thanks for starting this thread about the Shepp cd. I'd missed its release. I just ordered (ouch, it was expensive).

It's just trying to protect copyright. . . I understand I guess unconciously and it doesn't bother me. I've noticed NO degradation at all by ripping and importing. None.

I've autorized another one of mine (both Macs, maybe that's a factor?) And can't you burn a cd and import to something else? Seems I've done that.

I think you're correct, that Lonehill operates out of an area with a different copyright law. So it's not illegal for them to rip off the lps and sell in THAT zone. It's still therefore, I think, technically illegal for them to be sold in the US and maybe other markets. The labels have to go after the distributors and sellers in the US if they go after anyone. . . .And that's dicey business I would bet.

Still thinking about this movie. . . in the end the beautiful sets and cinematography are lingering in my brain favorably.

The "Capitol Paris session" is really a United Artists session, first issued as a UAJ lp. You're right of course, I have the UA lp (Cuscuna says this is fake stereo but sounds like real stereo to me) and the Capitol cd and the Storyville cd. Not sure why Storyville gets to reissue it.

And yes, the duets also appear on the Storyville Strayhorn cd, along with the Capitol Paris session with string quartet and voices.

Yes, I have this one preordered. . . though I was so disappointed when this was announced that it wasn't a show from an earlier year. Bill, you're still young. Might have another 55 to go!

Caught this yesterday afternoon as well. STUPENDOUS production, BEAUTIFUL filming and INCREDIBLE sets. I agree Sal, I couldn't make that empathetic connection with characters as well. I think it may have been self-defense, because I sensed from the start that tragedy was going to befall the whole family and I couldn't get past the "doom and gloom." The ending. . .well. . . I was struck with how totally bizaare the closing ballad was in conjunction with the ending of the drama!

They're both really good ones. . . . Both should still be in print for a while. . . . Can't go wrong either way.

I like the session myself. You do get a perfectly nice cover image from itunes, and it's half the price or less of the Japanese cd prices I've seen. I enjoy making cover art myself. I remain unconvinced, I think it's a stretch to call iTunes a ripoff.

It's been out at least once in Japan on cd, which is why iTunes has it. I have that. To be honest, I've bought other clones of Japanese cds from iTunes (Verve Vault) and they sound nearly identical to Japanese cds I have. Calling iTunes "ripoff artists" sounds inappropriate to my experience, very much so.

So what's your secret? I think they were afraid of all the money they'd lose if I quit because of a hike!
