I'm only half way through the War book. Been reading lots of articles in Jazzbeat (Buck's magazine) and the liner notes of the new Fats Waller box set.

Been up for 120 minutes. . . listened again to the first disc of the Fats Waller Legacy box set, and now I'm really enjoying disc 3 of the Mildred Bailey Mosaic.

I'm still getting them at 5.99 as well, as of today even. I got a reply yesterday from customer service. .. I sent the query on Dec. 4 and got a reply Jan. 4. They said they would ship me the Johnny Griffin cd that they didn't ship me before though they said they had. Then today. . . I got a message that the cd was backordered! LOL!

It made sense to me! It is what it is. They redid in the studio BOTH parts of 1956 and 1958. In the cd world, the live 1958 has been out on cd, not the studio bits. . . til Mosaic.

Congrats everyone! I didn't win. . . yet. . . ! Now if Big Al wins I'm going to be pissed! I did win one thing though, years ago (20!) from a vitamin company: a trip to Hawaii for two for a week, airfare covered from the West Coast, and accomodations covered. I investigated it, it wasn't a scam, the only stipulation was a two hour meeting about a timeshare must be attended, and I gave the trip to my parents for Christmas that year. They were already planning to visit my uncle in Pasadena, so they weren't even out airfare they would have not spent money on already. They had a blast. I was the golden child for a while!

I was that way for about nine years . . . had a small bedroom as my listening room/archive/library. Was great. . . . I think this is better (room is more than three times the size, speakers really breathe, stuff seemingly happens way behind them out in the front yard!) but do miss the intimacy of the other room some.

To paraphrase Dr. Johnson - "A man who is tired of the Jazztet Mosaic is tired of life.." That Capitol Set is a good one. I have it on vinyl so will prise it off the shelf (with fork lift truck) later. Oh I've listened to that music on and off for most of twenty years. . . . I just find the Jazztet material in particular to be a tad too "arranged" for my current tastes. I crave rawer and more visceral stuff I guess. Life's circumstances seem to color my listening habits.

Me, I'm withdrawing from near-field listening. I moved my best system out into the living-room dining room and am enjoying the change. There are advantages to both near-field and non near-field listening. . . . Now I definitely feel less as if I'm "in the music" or on stage, and more as if I'm in the audience. I can dig being in the audience. I'm excited to find how wonderfully my speakers can handle either setup.

I've had the Jazztet set for a while now--one of my favorites. I am, however, still on the fence about the Capitol set--at the moment leaning towards not getting it. I ponied up for the Jazztet. . . even though I had almost all the material. I find myself. . . bored. The music just doesnn't excite me these days. Other days in the future will probably be different. I'm so glad I bought the Capitol set years ago. It's expensive and I would be hard pressed not to go for it, and hard pressed to afford it. I don't want to live without it.

Okay, I'm envious! No great gift like that for me for Xmas! Right now, the new Fats Waller Legacy box. A nice job! Keepnews did good! GREAT sound.

I know for sure he sang it on that record with Roland Kirk. . . . I'm pretty certain he sang it with the Ellington Orchestra as well. Will look for evidence.

That Ellington will be nice to have, I have the lp and the studio performances are great! Now if they would just do "A Drum Is a Woman!"
