Interpreting Monk is really I think best when it's "personalized" -- for me. To try to play it "Monklike" is in some ways doable as his tunes are so distilled down to pure Monk is some fashion. . . . To take the music and further personalize it for YOURSELF as the player. . . is not as easy I think as one could guess. This is an instance where I think Evans just really put his own soulfulness (which is very different from Monk's) into the playing.

Well, I guess there's different ideas of "Deep." I think he transforms the song into an Evans vehicle, and I find it beautiful, and it has an elegance that I really enjoy.

Hmmm. . . I love some of the Monk versions. . . . My favorite would be "Round Midnight" on the Manne Hole Riverside. Awesome!

I agree that Tripp Lites are good products. Personal experience with their isolators such as the IS500 are very positive.

Really hard for me to pick favorites. I think this year I played "Planet Waves," "Blood on the Tracks" and the second disc of "No Direction Home" (I get stuck on "Visions of Johanna") the most.

I'm with you on Desolation Row. . . . I think it's more than just the melody, it's the imagery and the sound of the words. Fascinates me still!

I've gotten better and better at resisting! Being fiscally challenged helps.

Mine was either the first Smithsonian lp box set, or Bremen/Lausanne by Keith Jarrett. . . can't remember specifically which, got them both about the same time more than thirty years ago. First cd box set was the Prestige Chronicles box set (Miles Davis).

Wait a minute, when I looked up Fearless I realize I watched half of that over someone's shoulder, who was watching an Asian dvd of it on his laptop on the bus from Houston to Austin. Not quite my cup of tea. I like the fantastical and "ancient" ambiance much better.

I don't know, looks fine to me. Colors, action .. . .Just saw the trailer at a showing of Apoctolypto this afternoon. I was NOT ambivalent about Hero and Flying Daggers, love 'em! Have not seen Fearless.

Interesting, I hadn't seen that. Yes, Dylan. . . it was a year of appreciating him more for me as well, sparked by "No Direction Home." I love the most the stuff with The Band for sheer listenability, but the force and strength of his lyrics from the third lp or so up through Blood on the Tracks in my estimation is astonishing.
