Well you're the living proof of that. -
Great link Joe, and I like their catchy name.

Art Pepper Village Vanguard set for $29.99

I'd probably go along with DMP on this one, although I haven't listened to these recording in a while, I like them rather than love them. If I remember correctly, when I first heard these recordings I felt he started off playing pretty well on the Thursday night but dipped a little bit each night, which if you've read "Straight Life" is perfectly understandable. Would love to hear more about those first Vanguard sets DMP, don't know much about the guys in the band except Gumbs, just from his Woody Shaw recordings. -

WTF are you blathering about now?, what PM?, you keep sending me PMs, and speaking of which, I really should post them one of these days, talk about someone in the end-stages of Narcissiticosa Nervosa, I really hope that's your excuse. -

Yes, I'll second that question, I have a 2 or 3 of the single discs somewhere that I haven't listened to in a while, if it's just Laurie "Pepper", (were they ever offically/really married?) doing the talking I might just give it a miss. Notes are nothing special, some nice pictures and discussion from Ms. Pepper. I would not buy the set for the notes, the music is really good and the between track introductions/comments are interesting. Art Pepper was a great artist and at the same time a complete mess due to drugs and emotional problems. He obviously suffered a lot and I am sure inflicted emotional pain on the people close to him. It is a shame considering the beautiful music he made at the same time. Martin Cheers Martin. -

What on earth is going on at Concord NOW???
Cliff Englewood replied to The Magnificent Goldberg's topic in Re-issues
Well, that was a good thought, so I checked http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?...x=6070236678408 It doesn't say anything about it being a CD-R, unless I've missed it. And CD-Rs wouldn't have a release date of next Tuesday, would they? MG I was kinda half joking with that one, but weren't the Blue Note CD-Rs advertised as normal CDs initially??? -

They're probably CD-Rs, that explains the price. -
European reissues of the Ahmad Jamal Argo/Cadet recordings
Cliff Englewood replied to bebopbob's topic in Re-issues
I have this issue of the Spotlite recordings, which I think is the same one John S is talking about and I would agree with his review, right down to the fact that I don't remember too much about the 3 studio tracks, but the live stuff sounded fine. Amazon link for the Complete Live at the Spotlite Club 1958 -
Although I know it's not a Jazz book, but as he's back in the news again recently I thought I would give this a bit of a plug, for anyone who's interested. It really is a very enjoyable read. It turns out that early on he got some very important advice on how to make a living in the music business from none other than Barney Kessel!!!! Spector was a huge Kessel fan, he actually wrote a letter to Downbeat telling them they should give him more coverage. He eventually got to meet him and was looking for tips on how to make it as a Jazz guitarist but to cut a long story short Kessel told him it would be really difficult to make a living in Jazz and that the real money was in Publishing and Production!!! Oh yeah, by the way, he is sooooooooooooooo guilty.

Nice clip there JSngry, cheers.

Ditto on "Lazy Afternoon", class.

I didn't think I would want every alternate take Gray played until I got this; Gray is just excellent on all the alternates of the "One for Prez" cd, but it's so hard to find things in Dublin these days I might just go for it. Cheers

Thanks Lon and Mike for your speedy replies, I might just have to pick this one up. Cheers. As a side note, I have a soft spot for the song "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" due to it's "staring role" in one of my favorite films, "The Killing of a Chinese Bookie", I love when Ben Gazzara is singing it into the phone, classic.

Ah so it's a live session, cheers Lon and Mike. How is the sound on the Prestige release? Decent?

Late 60s/Early 70s soul/funk jazz with extended tracks

I would highly recommend this Charles Earland 2/for.. Living Black!/Live at the Lighthouse Some great performances on this. -
Now Allen you know you're not intelligent enough to be a Wal-Mart greeter, they never hire "academics", and besides, what would happen if Wynton Marsalis walked in, you'd have to run away from him, again.

Art Pepper Village Vanguard set for $29.99
Cliff Englewood replied to Edward's topic in Mosaic and other box sets...
A great set for a crazy price I had the K2 set and sold it. The highs sounded boosted, too "sharp/edgy" to my ears. The regular set is a bit better in that respect. And if you listen to some of the between song banter from Art, you could also say a crazy set for a great price. -
I think this is the weirdest part of the whole deal. Why, why and thrice why???
-
B Goren I bought this myself months ago and have yet to listen to it, how is the sound? Very reasonable sound. Dont forget that some of these recordings are more than 70 years old. Yea I have some of those McTell recordings on various other Sets but that one looks like it has pretty much all his early recordings. Did you ever get the Shearing MPS trio Set?
