  1. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't know he was still alive. RIP, Mr. Parlan!
  2. "Offering" is one of my favorites! I saw him 5 times in the early 70s - I think all were with 11th House. Nice obit in the WaPo. Says he died of "complications from arteriosclerosis": Larry Coryell, dazzling guitarist who brought rock energy to jazz, dies at 73
  3. I just sent a question about personnel and date to Todd Barkan on FB. Will let you know if he responds.
  4. I was just listening to a Vanguard collection recently. He had such a varied career, and was always in command. RIP, Larry.
  5. Solo piano?
  6. Anyone know the Kraken Quartet?
  7. Last night I saw the Scott Amendola Band w/ Nels Cline, Jeff Parker, Jenny Scheinman and John Schifflet at SFJAZZ's Joe Henderson Lab. Really interesting show that ranged from Tony Williams Lifetime intensity to reflective scored pieces - all in about an hour. Good contributions from all the musicians, too. Nice to see a group like this in such a small venue, too.
  8. There are a LOT of interesting artists at that festival. It's definitely on my radar ... maybe next year.

    Coryell

Which is good. Not THAT big of an Eleventh House fan.

    Coryell

I saw that album before, but thought it was all Eleventh House tracks ... but now that I look at the tracks, it's not.

    Coryell

Agreed! Offering and Barefoot Boy are two of Coryell's best from that period. Would like to find a copy CD or digital of Offering someday, too. I saw a Vanguard compilation a while back called "The Essential Larry Coryell" that was pretty good, but not sure if it's still available.
  12. Whoa! I'll check it out, Agggggggggggggggggggggggg!
  13. Anybody listen to Umphrey's McGee? I always thought they were some kind of hippie jam band outfit. But I just read an interview with the guitarists and discovered that they're more proggy than anything else. Now listening to "Similar Skin", which is definitely in the prog/rock/metal genre!

Has that Arnie Lawrence ever been reissued on CD or otherwise?

    The Damned

    Thanks for the heads up!
  17. Tonight: the Cookers in the VERY intimate 100-seat Joe Henderson Lab at SFJAZZ. Should be GREAT!
  18. I have some of the original albums, and if the rest of the set is as good as those you're in for a treat. I need to get this box, too, since all my vinyl is in storage. The Wilson set was written by Doug Ramsey. I like the booklet - nice overview plus session notes. Also a LOT of great photos that you probably won't get anywhere else.
  19. The Farmer disk is nice ... and the story behind it, too!
  20. The 3-disk Selects were deceiving because there were more than 3 albums crammed in there. Usually about 4-6 total.
  21. Haven't been yet, but really want to go. I've been going to SXSW for several years, and it's just a week after that so the timing is bad. I'm thinking of switching festivals after this year, though.
  22. There's also a very interesting festival in Knoxville that he's appearing in, right before that: the Big Ears Festival. A very eclectic and intriguing lineup of artists, too! Check it out.
  23. I liked the Select formula, too. I guess the economics of the recorded music industry are taking their toll. I have a very similar collection as Rooster (but only 10), with a few exceptions: 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 16, 20, 26 + Tony Williams and Akiyoshi/Tabackin FYI on the "Free Shipping" - only if over $50.
  24. Pretty much what I think about the set(s), too. Nice idea, but ...

    John Wetton, RIP

    I always liked Fearless!
