  1. Exactly! I picked up the virus about 2 weeks ago even though I've had all 3 boosters. But the effects were minimal. At first I thought my allergies were acting up (headache, runny nose, etc), but something didn't seem right so I decided to self-test and I was positive. It turns out those symptoms were about the worst of it. My doctor prescribed Paxlovid for me, but I probably could have gone without it. Why take that chance, though? I'm sure my "illness" such as it was, was reduced considerably by getting vaxed. BTW, I'm over it now and have recently re-tested Negative.
  2. Don't think so. A friend saw him in LA and it was just his usual quartet.
  3. Seeing James McMurtry & band on Sunday

    Tomeka Reid

I missed that trio set unfortunately, but saw her with the expanded Art Ensemble

    Tomeka Reid

Tomeka at Big Ears earlier this year (with Craig Taborn and Chez Smith)
  6. Looking forward to seeing James & the band on Sunday
  7. And not "just" Carmell, you get some Gerald Wilson sessions, too!
  8. Yeah. That's a nice set. Haven't listened to it in a while. Oughta give it a spin sometime soon.
  9. Good one! Haven't heard that in YEARS
  10. Amanda Shires "Take It Like A Man"
  11. From last year's Other Minds Fest
  12. One difference is that Big Ears is a non-profit, so that's not as much of a goal. But I will always have concerns about the SXSW-ing of it. I went there for 10 years before it got completely out of hand and wasn't fun anymore.
  13. Huh - interesting. Who would they be having that needs such large venues?
  14. Yes, Harrison replaced Handy several years ago. Handy subs occasionally, though. Went to Ronnie Scott's last Wednesday. Fun show with Ronnie Scott’s Club Quintet [(James Pearson (p), Alex Garnett (as/ts), Freddie Gravita (tpt), Sam Burgess (b), Chris Higginbottom (d)]. Their theme for the night was ‘1959 …The Year That Shaped Jazz’. So they played tunes like So What and Blue Rondo A La Turk, as well as a few originals in the same style. Not familiar with any of the musicians, but the sax and piano player were standouts.

Tyshawn with electronic artist King Britt last October at the Other Minds Fest

    Tyshawn Sorey

Will keep an eye out for that. And definitely hope to catch at least one of his shows at Big Ears.
  17. Just a quick survey for other World music: Amadou & Miriam are from Africa. Ibeyi from Cuba.Tarta Relena, Spain. I'm sure there's more. As I just quickly clicked through the artists I'm not familiar with, it looks VERY promising! As usual, what I tend to find most interesting at BE is discovering musicians and musical styles I've never heard before. It's gonna be GOOD!
  18. At first I was a little disappointed in the lineup mainly because of so many returnees from last year. But the more I look at it, I'm not worried about seeing great music. I'm sure there will be lots of additions/changes in the next 6 months, too.
  19. Shawn is still in LA. You can find him on FB. I originally thought Signify was their best effort too, but have updated to "In Absentia" and "Arriving" for a live album (although "Anesthetize" is pretty excellent, too)
  20. Supergrass - Self-titled 3rd album
