  1. I don't remember exactly, but I saw them twice. First was their own show which included a drummer, so probably pieces from Real Life. The other show was a collaboration with Caroline Shaw. Everything was composed by her and she sang some pieces, too.
  2. Fourth! Trying to remember what my first jazz record was ... maybe Red Clay
  3. Being one of my first jazz albums, I'll always like the original set ... including the narration!
  4. Looks like I was at some of the shows already mentioned. This was my best Big Ears yet. Saw many EXCELLENT performances - some expected and many that were NOT. Some favorites were: Attacca Quartet, mssv, Taborn Trio, Cyrille w/Akinmusire, Patty Smith Band, Myra Melford & Snowy Egret and ALL of Sunday except for dePlume and Frisell (who spent too much time noodling and playing with electronics) THURSDAY Kronos Quartet + So Percussion, Caroline Shaw, Shodekeh 75 Dollar Bill Attacca Quartet Bill Callahan mssv (Mike Baggetta, Mike Watt, Stephen Hodges) FRIDAY Conversation: Ann Powers w/Joe Henry, Jason Moran Craig Taborn Trio w/Tomeka Reid, Chez Smith Harriet Tubman Jeff Parker & New Breed w/Makaya McCraven, Josh Johnson, Paul Bryant Andrew Cyrille w/Akinmusire Patti Smith Band Kim Gordon (15 minutes) Mdou Moctar SATURDAY Nikki Giovanni Myra Melford & Snowy Egret Caroline Shaw/Attacca Quartet Meredith Monk w/Bang on a Can All-Stars, Theo Bleckman Val Jenty Circuit des Yeux Annette Peacock SUNDAY Alabaster dePlume Miguel Zenon & Spektral Quartet Bill Frisell Trio w/Brian Blade, Thomas Morgan Odean Pope & Immanuel Wilkins w/Kresten Osgood, drums Bang on a Can All Stars (Terry Riley's Autodreamographical Tales) John Zorn New Electric Masada w/Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, John Medeski, Brian Marsella, Trevor Dunn, Kenny Wollesen, Ches Smith, Kenny Grohowski
  5. There was a VERY nice tribute to her at SFJAZZ in February: TERRI LYNE CARRINGTON: GENIUS, GRACE AND FIRE: A TRIBUTE TO GERI ALLEN W/ RAVI COLTRANE, DAVE HOLLAND, & JASON MORAN The show was introduced by her brother, Mount, who is also an Exec with SFJAZZ
  6. Just got back from seeing Chris Potter with Craig Taborn, Dave Holland and Eric Harland tearing it up at SFJAZZ!
  7. Nice album with the genius of her husband John Leventhal producing and adding extremely tasty guitar parts
  8. The band was scheduled to play at the upcoming Big Ears Festival. They're still on the schedule, but now being billed as: Brian Blade, Bill Frisell, Jason Moran & Thomas Morgan: The Music of Ron Miles. As of their last update, they only state that he will be "unable to appear at Big Ears due to a medical condition requiring surgery and an extended period of convalescence". I assume this show will still go on.
  9. A great band for SURE. I was fortunate to see them a number of times. Always on fire! The Timeless and Soul Note albums are my favorites.
  10. Excellent! I haven't looked for a couple weeks, so that's a BIG improvement.
  11. One of his better albums, for sure!
  12. I still haven't been able to face up to putting a schedule together. The hardest part for me will be logistics. Especially when it involves a trek between the Bijou/Tennessee Auditoriums and the Standard/Mill & Mine clubs. I'm hoping that the shuttle bus situation will be a little more reliable this year.
  13. That edition was especially good! I've seen nearly every edition at least once. It's been interesting to see the band as it changes - typically one or two musicians per year. I don't have all the albums, though.
  14. I totally missed that listing! Should have gone.
  15. Three weeks!
  16. They had almost 3 months to work this out. RIDICULOUS!
  17. I saw him on Friday with Terri Lyne Carrington during her SFJAZZ residency. I thought he was good, but he wasn't the sole focus of the music. He shared the stage with Kris Davis, Linda May Han Oh, Elena Penderhughes (flute) and Matt Stevens on guitar
