Pim Posted February 18, 2022 Report Posted February 18, 2022 The Acoustic Sounds series version. I already had the Impulse digipack cd but Coltrane is my absolute here, even more than Mal. So I had to pick this one up. Unfortunately these releases are (to) expensive. But the sound…. It’s indescribable! I ain’t no audiophile nor am I a religious/spiritual person but to hear Wise One like this almost is like a spiritual experience. It’s like Trane is playing right here in my room. Fantastic reissue. I think Night of the Mark 7 is "better" but GBG is a pretty fine set. It's also not "rare" by any stretch, though demand is pretty high I guess. Quote

There are also great live versions of Dex with Woody Shaw and Slide Hampton on the mega proiect "CBS All Stars live at Montreux". Especially Woody´s "Moontrane" and Dexters "Fried Bananas".... Quote

Dipping into the Mosaic Box is a good option, if you have it. Personal preference would probably be ‘Genesis’ but they are all great. I also have a great liking for ‘At This Point In Time’ and that Lee Morgan session on ‘Prime Element’. Over here in Southern England we have been battered by very severe Atlantic storms, the worst in at least 30 years. So - a great opportunity for jazz vinyl listening this weekend, assuming your local electricity supplies aren’t cut off. Sadly, I don’t have fall back option of wind up gramophone. At the moment, I seem to be in a healthy area amongst a sea of outages, like quite a bit of the South. Italy sounding good at the moment. Edited February 19, 2022 by sidewinder Quote
mjazzg Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 Toshiyuki Miyama & The New Herd first listen, sounding great. Thanks @Rabshakeh Quote
sidewinder Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 (edited) A couple of items from my Hiroshi Tanno library, in remembrance. Toshiba with OBI. In immaculate condition as always and sounding great. Bonus voucher on the OBI to get Reuben Wilson ‘Love Bug’ ! I have a Liberty if this one and can’t recall it ever sounding so good. Will have to check. Another Toshiba - no OBI but again, immaculate. Edited February 19, 2022 by sidewinder Quote

I never did buy any vinyl from him as his prices were very high (as they are in Japan). I came very close when Disk Union came out with those mono replicas of a bunch of Blue Note titles but with the shipping, they came out at almost $90/each so I balked. I wish I had pulled the trigger on a few of them as they are now going for crazy money. For some reason, I thought I'd be able to pick them up used for less. Who foresaw this market? Quote

Yeah, they weren’t cheap at the time but I recall paying about equivalent of £20 or so for Toshiba and £35-40 for Kings with shipping on top. The pound was healthy at the time so that took some of the sting away. Only ever bought Toshiba and King LPs, never bothered with the CDs. The LP lists were enough of a challenge for me. I used to look at his fantastic lists of US originals and salivate - beyond my pay grade ! Quote

Thanks @Rabshakeh Glad that you're enjoying it. I had it on again last week, inspired by the recent post of Maynard Ferguson's M.F. Horn 4&5: Live at Jimmy's, which has a similar funky electric big band bebop feel. Quote

Yes, this was the series: https://www.discogs.com/label/1513760-Blue-Note-%E3%83%97%E3%83%AC%E3%83%9F%E3%82%A2%E3%83%A0%E5%BE%A9%E5%88%BB%E3%82%B7%E3%83%AA%E3%83%BC%E3%82%BA They even replicated the flatter vinyl edge of the earlier 1500 series releases. I got a couple back then (directly from Hiroshi). They were about 50 Euro each including shipping. Sound is fine, but I wouldn't be able to rate them against originals of the same titles (which I have never heard). The titles I got was Henderson's 'In' N Out', Dorham's 'Afro-Cuban' and 'Adam' s Apple'. Should have gotten additional titles really, but I couldn't afford more at the time. Quote
sidewinder Posted February 19, 2022 Report Posted February 19, 2022 The discogs prices for those Disk Union LPs are indeed beyond lunatic ! Quote
