That’s a really good box set, which I need to dig out again. I also have pretty well all (I think) of the Japanese pressing Nocturne series on LP. I think they were done by Toshiba. Norma Winstone is appearing tomorrow at Swanage I think in a small group including pianist Nicki Illes. I hope to catch it. Some really good vocalists at this year’s festival, not least Claire Martin with her group. I think she lives up the coast at Brighton so sort of home territory. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted July 7, 2023 Report Posted July 7, 2023 Hank Mobley - A Slice Of The Top (Blue Note Connoisseur LP). I really enjoy this session. I have since I first heard it on the LT LP that I bought many years ago. I still think the cymbals are wonky on some of the tracks, which is why I'm guessing it wasn't released when it was recorded but who knows, maybe Blue Note just didn't like it? Michael Cuscuna deserves all of the credit he has gotten for creating that great LT series in the late 70s. Happy birthday Hank. Quote
jazzbo Posted July 7, 2023 Report Posted July 7, 2023 You know it took me some years to realize that the cover photo section is a slice of the top. Quote

Congrats that is really good. Have the CD-box plus some vinyls as the Virgil Gonsalves LP and a Herbie Harper 5tet. Missing the Bud Shank LP among others. Quote

For a while it was hard to find after his recommendation but the years have marched on, so it's likely available again. Until he mentions it again or someone bubbles his old post back up. Quote

mjazzg Posted July 10, 2023 Report Posted July 10, 2023 Lester Bowie - The Great Pretender [ECM, Germany 1981] Reacquainting myself with this gem. Thanks @Rabshakeh. Maybe 'All The Magic!' needs investigating again next. These were albums I listened to courtesy of my local library in the early days of my Jazz listening life so never owned them other than on long lost cassette recordings. Quote
