The LA Jazzinstitute has issued over the years about 15 'for members only' CD's with great west coast jazz artists visiting the Lighthouse. You can look them up on Discogs Edited July 29, 2023 by jazzcorner typo Quote

Larry Kart Posted July 30, 2023 Report Posted July 30, 2023 No alcohol was served there. I went there once to review Freddie Hubbard. A very nice place. Quote
JSngry Posted July 30, 2023 Report Posted July 30, 2023 Yeah, Jamal was serious about his Muslim faith and stipulated that no alcohol was to be served in his club. Quote

It reminds me of Albert's Mexican Village, a pioneering Kilgore, Tx Tex-Mex joint that had a similar block style building and a similarly oversized neon name sign. https://www.gettyimages.co.uk/detail/news-photo/black-and-white-photograph-featuring-two-women-standing-in-news-photo/528673682 It was at the end of a street that gradually deteriorated over time, and by, say, 1970, you would have seen the same car parked in front of it that you see in that photograph. Probably with the headlights off, though. The Albert's legacy lives, though. Their recipe for their "hot sauce" (which was not at all spicy but is just incredibly flavorful!!!) has long outlived the restaurant, survived the pandemic and subsequent inflation, and only slight corporate medication of it's recipie. A trivia note: Albert's did not serve their salsa with chips. The served it with saltines! I have never tried that and probably never will. But I guess their clientele liked well enough to keep the salsa alive into today! Quote

I didn´t know that Max Roach is on drums, so if I had knewn that Max is on drums it would have been easier for me to decide to buy it. Typical west coast jazz somehow didn´t get into my heart even after 50 years of listening and playing. I tried to listen to some, but missed the tension that I´m looking for. Especially from the rhythm sections. I think I had heard the thing where Chet Baker played with Bird, but I wouldn´t say it was exceptional, it was good playing for a shy kid in aw of the encounter with Bird, and he manages to get thru, which is quite a good job... Rolf Ericson was a very very good trumpet player. Quote

sidewinder Posted July 30, 2023 Report Posted July 30, 2023 I have that KAPP 2LP set somewhere in a Japanese pressing I think. Will have to dig it out. Overdue spin for this 2LP gem in the Pure Pleasure version. I used to have this on a Black Lion double LP but sold it for something like £2 to Mole Jazz about 40 years ago. What a moron - I guess it indicates how tastes change over time. To me, this sounds as good as or better than the Black Lion, which had different cover art as well. Quote

I have the Black Lion but not purchased from Mole. I often think it would be fun to compile my shadow collection of all the 100s LPs I have sold over the years. Pleased to say not too many that I regret, especially not the Metal ones! Quote

Have to say - this Pure Pleasure version sounds better than the Black Lion ever did. Or maybe it is a function of the system I’m playing it on? The sleeve and vinyl quality are superior, for sure. That Black Lion I picked up second hand anyway so when sold to Mole it was 3rd hand. Over the years I’ve actually sold very few LPs. All those DMM Blue Notes, I’ve still got. Maybe not a bad thing as some of them are now attracting crazy prices. Edited July 30, 2023 by sidewinder Quote

Decca I think and from the master tapes - seems to be readily available here in the UK and I would guess that Dusty Groove should stock it. Comes in quite a large box with what seems to be a very comprehensive booklet/book covering Blossom’s career. A real quality release by the sound of it but a limited issue. I have a handful of Pure Pleasures but each of them sounds too in-yer-face too hot for my liking, it as if they're too clean, if that makes any sense at all. I'm not expecting it to. I know plenty of people really rate them, your good self included, so it must be down to me. It's also now become self-fulfilling, so if I do buy another it's going to sound the same Quote
