Woody Herman Columbia - was finally able to pick this up at the local post office yesterday afternoon .... sounds considerably better than the old French CBS LP box set.

I kept up with each release in the series. It was a great way to introduce myself to new music - in several cases artists I might not have sought out.

#5 - Paul Chambers sticks out with the white spine.  All other #s 1-20 were pastel colors.  Then they switched to pictures on the spine from 21 - 38 except for #27 - Cohn, Newman & Green and #32 - Pendulum.

Really glad I have them. Lots of enjoyment over the years. Few regrets.  Maybe the Johnny Mercer. I think I posted something here where I compared that set to the candy, Circus Peanuts - those little orange goodies that after two, you've had enough - a little goes a long way.

I would love love to see the series make it to 40 - for no other reason to even out how they fit on my shelves.

I think I've now got all of the Selects apart from the 'Boogie Woogie Piano' set and will no doubt pick that one up at some stage.

Now spinning disk 1 of:

Fantastic - hadn't heard the disk 1 material before.

The Live Recordings of Louis Armstrong and the All Stars. Disc 1, Town Hall concert. "Pennies from Heaven". Wow.

"Back O Town Blues"...... Some excellent cornet (or maybe trumpet) playing by Bobby Hackett behind Louis' wonderful singing. Haven't heard much comment on Bobby Hackett's great playing on these sides.

Been listening to a good many Mosaics lately - Cecil Taylor Candid, Ellington Capitol, and Mobley in the past few days. Tonight, parts of two Selects:

Sam Rivers Rivbea Orchestra. I panicked a little when this went out print without me realizing that it was even running low. But my copy from an Amazon vendor (priced about the same as Mosiac retail) arrived today. After hearing the first disc, I think that this may be my favorite Rivers large ensemble material.

Dizzy Reece.

Woody Herman Orchestra Columbia recordings. "Ah your fathers mustache".......the alternates are fun to listen to since I can imagine, in concert, repeating this tune with "and one more time!" High school and college jazz bands should have an arrangement of this.

Edited to say from disc 2 of the Mosaic set

I went along with my wife to do a few errands yesterday afternoon. While she went into Target I decided to go into a store that has mostly used DVDs but has a small section of CDs. Usually I never find anything of interest to me. In one of their glass cabinets was The complete Verve Johnny Hodges small group sessions Mosaic for $49.99! Used but very good condition. Anyway I'm listening to disc 1 now. It's wonderful. You just never know.....

Compared to most everyone here I have been a late bloomer with what I've listened to for the first time (buying and listening to the great series of Nessa recordings for the first time starting just two years ago for example). So, also for the first time, I am really enjoying the Mosaic Small Group Johnny Hodges 1956 - 61. Disc 3 right now.

Louis Armstrong All Stars set, disc 8 Newport '56. And all because my wife asked if I would put on some Louis this morning. That was fun (that she asked to hear some Pops).

And now disc 6 of the Johnny Hodges set which she also likes a lot (and for which I credit her for us having. :-))
