BFrank Posted May 31, 2017 Report Posted May 31, 2017 Joe Pass, disk #3. Although not sure how much I'm "enjoying" this set. It's a mixed bag, IMO. Quote
OliverM Posted June 4, 2017 Report Posted June 4, 2017 Only recently purchased this set. It is full of wonders. Already been through discs 1-5. Quote
Tom 1960 Posted June 7, 2017 Report Posted June 7, 2017 I'm jealous, John. It was either that set or the Savoy which I purchased earlier today. Next month I'll get the Beehive. Good to hear some positive feedback on this set. Quote

You know that vocalists are not really my 'thing' (I much prefer instrumental jazz), but the Johnny Hartman session is very, very good. This is one of those Mosaic sets where the individual sessions seem to sound better as part of the whole set, rather than on their own. I can't explain why that should be, but it's true for a few other Mosaics as well, the Elvin Jones set , for example. Edited June 10, 2017 by John Tapscott Quote

I have the Elvin Jones SHM-CDs and I think these albums stand on their own pretty well, though the excellence of the new remasters might be a factor in this. It is just that the later Blue Note albums aren't as good as Puttin' It Together, The Ultimate, Poly-Currents, Coalition, and Genesis. I never enjoyed the Lighthouse albums. Perhaps I should listen to them again. Edited June 10, 2017 by erwbol Quote
Bill Nelson Posted June 10, 2017 Report Posted June 10, 2017 Exactly. Those five Elvin Blue Notes above are the ones on my shelf. 'Lighthouse' was workmanlike and never impressed. Quote
ElginThompson Posted June 17, 2017 Report Posted June 17, 2017 What else? The newly arrived Savoy Be-Bop sessions. Disc 2 w/ the Bebop Boys on Bebop in Pastel (Bouncing with Bud). Quote

Perhaps that's because it is not an Ellington tune. It was recorded at least three times in 1939 -- by Barney Bigard (June 8), by Cab Calloway (July 17), and by Leo Watson (August 22). The composer credits on these versions are to Irving Mills, Buck Ram, and, in some cases, Cab Calloway. The tune is actually based on a much older Yiddish tune.
