Joe Bip Posted December 2, 2023 Report Posted December 2, 2023 Columbia Jazz Piano Moods set the mood for roughhousing with my four-year-old, a recent purchase (the Mosaic set, that is), specifically the Tatum concert, which sounds much clearer to me than my 1970s Columbia vinyl release of the same date. Didn't know about this set until just this moment and now I'm debating pulling the trigger for a copy on Discogs currently for $50. Quote
Joe Bip Posted December 5, 2023 Report Posted December 5, 2023 For that price, I'd say grab it. Someone will! I noticed a chancer on eBay who's asking that price just for the last disc of the set. I've been making my way through the set starting with pianists I'm the most familiar with. The Earl Hines trio was predictably great. This purchase also led me to revisit pianists I hadn't listened to in years, like Ralph Sutton, Jess Stacy, and Joe Bushkin. When I went for this set, I already owned the latter's Piano Moods album on a CD that also included his follow-up After Hours, which adds in some fine playing by Buck Clayton. Quote

ghost of miles Posted December 8, 2023 Report Posted December 8, 2023 Pulled this off the shelf earlier in the week because I wanted to play “Mother Ship” on my afternoon show and am now revisiting the set in its entirety for the first time in many years. Quote

Ken Dryden Posted February 2, 2024 Report Posted February 2, 2024 (edited) I just acquired this set with the CDs still sealed. I had most, but not of all the tracks. Edited February 2, 2024 by Ken Dryden Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 4, 2024 Report Posted February 4, 2024 Disc 7, which is the 1995 Columbia album Makin’ a Move. I’m sure Threadgill-Ellington comparisons are a dime a dozen and beside the point, but if somebody told me to name someone whose artistic/compositional achievements over the past 50 years occupy a realm of significance similar to Ellington’s, Threadgill would come to mind.
